Sam Burgess tunnel vision comes to light after ugly exchange with rival coach in Super League

Former Rabbitohs star Sam Burgess has been involved in an ugly run-in with rival Richie Myle in the tunnel over a heated administration error in the Super League. Burgess' Warrington defeated Hull 24-6 to move into second place on points difference after 10 games in the Super League.

However, the biggest drama appeared to take place off the field with Burgess and Myler coming together in the tunnel over a disagreement. The former Rabbitohs forward claimed the Hull director of rugby made a 'smart comment', which prompted Burgess and him to shoulder each other.

The duo appeared to exchange words before heading off in opposite directions down the tunnel. The argument developed as Warrington were penalised an interchange during the victory for a bizarre administration error.

Warrington named Adam Holroyd as the second rower on the bench. Although Warrington failed to put his name in the 21-man squad and submit it to the Rugby Football League two days earlier. Hull got word of the administration mistake and Burgess alleged they made a complaint. Holroyd was named in the team on social media and fans were under the impression he would play.

And Burgess was left fuming having called for common sense to prevail over the admin error on Warrington's behalf. "I don't know, it was poor management from someone," Burgess told Sky Sports after the victory. "We named a 21-man squad, it's on our social media and it's public, so we've got to get it right.

"We talk about concussion and protecting our players, well tonight you've failed. Someone needs to be held accountable for that. We had a choice to make before the game and we didn't make the right choice for the players. If it had been the other way round, I'd have made the right choice for the player regardless. We’re living in that world now, so let’s all get on board. Otherwise, what are we doing?”

In 2020 the Rugby Football League made a rule that if a player was named in the team, but not in the 21-man squad two days earlier, the team would lose a substitution. And Burgess took aim at Hull after he alleged they made the complaint.

"My 21 got sent in earlier in the week," Burgess said after the match to reporters. "Everyone got it except the RFL, so Hull complained, and I lost a sub pre-game. It's just not good enough. There was a mess up, but I don't know what we are trying to do."

Burgess also claimed he reacted to a comment made from Myler after the match. He was also ready to move on from the exchange and not dwell on it. "It is a very small corridor," Burgess said of the incident in his post-match press conference.

"He made some smart comment as I was walking past. He really doesn't need to do that. I get he is new in the job - so am I. But the game is done, it's done now. Let's move on."
