Mitch Marsh's admission over cricket prodigy Jake Fraser-McGurk's snub amid fan backlash

The Aussie captain has opened up about why the star didn't make it in the World Cup squad.

Mitchell Marsh has revealed why Australia didn't take Jake Fraser-McGurk to the T20 World Cup after fans were left questioning why the devastating 22-year-old wasn't selected for his form. While there were a number of big names left out of the Aussie T20 World Cup squad, the biggest uproar was around the exclusion of Fraser-McGurk.

The young batter has taken the cricket world by storm in recent months having made his debut for Australia against the West Indies, before frightening bowlers in the IPL with his swashbuckling strokes. Ricky Ponting has even moved Fraser-McGurk up the order for the Delhi Capitals in place of veteran Australian opener David Warner.

And fans were calling for the exciting opener to start as opener for Australia alongside Travis Head, which would be great experience for one of the future stars of Aussie cricket. Instead, Australian selectors opted for Warner.

This has been a divisive call with Warner not in form of late. Warner had only passed 50 once in his last seven innings in the IPL. His latest four scores read: 18, 10, 8 and 1. And speaking on SEN Radio on Thursday, new captain Marsh admitted the team felt they wanted to go towards experience in the squad with most positions covered.

“Jakey is an outstanding talent,” Marsh said. "I think you know the way he's taking on the IPL, he’s taken it by storm, they’re all loving him. But certainly, the Delhi crew are enjoying his company and enjoying what he brings to the team.

“There's no doubt that he's going to have a huge future, wherever he plays. But we feel like we've got all bases covered within our team. Heady and David Warner have been fantastic for us, not only for a long period of time but over the last 18 months building towards this World Cup.

"We're really comfortable that we've got the right 15, to hopefully take us deep into the World Cup.” Marsh did admit he believes Fraser-McGurk will make his way into the team shortly after the World Cup when he claimed: "He's got an exciting future."

Speaking to media on Wednesday, George Bailey admitted Fraser-McGurk was "close" to getting selected, but he just wasn't versatile enough. "His form's been great of late, which is fantastic, but the way we're functioning at the top of the order with the three guys we've had there has been really strong as well," Bailey said. "It certainly looks like the top of the order is where he's best suited.

"We think we've got some other guys that have got some good flexibility around where they'll bat … and we have had players perform in different batting roles to cover off any eventuality." The likes of David Warner, Travis Head, Glenn Maxwell and Mitchell Marsh will likely feature at the top of the batting order when Australia kick off their tournament against Oman on June 6. And Bailey says the consensus was Fraser-McGurk was up against those players for a place in the side.
