Eddie Betts in sad admission about his kids as 'disgusting' footage rocks AFL world

The AFL world is rallying around Eddie Betts after the former Adelaide Crows legend shared footage of a sickening racial slur against his children, while they were playing near their home. The Indigenous AFL icon has spoken powerfully in the past about his own experiences of racism but has been left shattered after his children were subjected to racial abuse while playing basketball next to their property.

Betts shared the disgusting clip on social media on Thursday night that showed a white car drive past the family home, before a man could be heard repeatedly yelling the 'N' word towards the children. Security cameras captured several angles of the incident, with the children appearing to react after hearing the man shout out the racial slur.

The incident has understandably sparked fury, with Betts taking to social media to call out the clip in a heartbreaking admission about his children. “Aboriginal kids deserve to be able to play safely, free from racism and abuse over the fence,” Betts captioned the post containing video of the incident.

“We are not even safe in our own homes. If you know who this is please let me them know that I’m open to having a chat about how much this hurts our kids.” The AFL world was quick to condemn the racist abuse, with many labelling it "disgraceful" and "disgusting" and having absolutely no place in society.

The Western Bulldogs social media account posted: “Disgraceful. Sending love Eddie.” Melbourne Demons star Christian Petracca added: “Disgusting!!! Thinking of you and the family.” Comedian Nazeem Hussain commented: “Wow bro. Disgusting. Your compassion and patience are on a superhero level. Love you.”

Eddie Betts has spoken out against racism in the past

Betts has spoken openly about his battles against racism in the past, with the Adelaide Crows and Carlton great revealing he and his son were once asked to leave a public pool because they were making other patrons uncomfortable. Betts made the heartbreaking revelation during an interview in 2022 while speaking about racist allegations levelled against Hawthorn during that season.

"Aboriginal people, we're not surprised (about the Hawthorn allegations) as well, (because) we face these issues in many systems - in the education system, in the justice system, in the health system... It always comes back to what I've been preaching a lot, and that's education," Betts said on Fox Footy at the time.

Betts detailed in heartbreaking fashion how he'd experienced instances of racism in society and said it made him feel like he didn't belong. He then went on to detail the pool incident with his son, before praising his wife for her unwavering support.

“I find myself being followed by security guards in a shop,” Betts added. “This year (2022), I was in a pool. And the lifeguard came up to me and told me that I needed to get out of the pool. I was holding my kid, my baby in my hand.

“I found out that two old white elderly people told the lifeguard to tell me to get out of the pool because I was making their grandchild uncomfortable. And that just made me feel like I don’t belong here in Australia, because these issues keep occurring.

“I honestly don’t feel like I belong here, but my wife keeps driving it into me and keeps telling me that out of anyone, you should feel like you belong here, out of everybody because this is your country, and you should never feel like that.”
