‘Frasier’ star John Mahoney dies at 77

Mahoney won a SAG Award for his role on Frasier.

John Mahoney, best known for playing Martin Crane on 11 seasons of 'Frasier,' died in Chicago on Sunday while in hospice care, his manager, Paul Martino, confirmed. He was 77.

Mahoney played the father of Kelsey Grammer and David Hyde Pierce’s characters during the show’s run, which lasted from 1993 to 2004. He won a SAG Award for his role, and received two Emmy nominations and two Golden Globe nods for his portrayal.

In recent years, he had landed a recurring role on 'Hot in Cleveland,' which he appeared on from 2011 to 2014 as Roy, the love interest of Betty White’s character Elka.

In movies, Mahoney garnered recognition in Barry Levinson's Tin Men (1987), playing Richard Dreyfuss' business partner. The same year, he was memorable in Moonstruck as a depressed college professor who regularly had affairs with his students.
