A regular kitchen oven takes around 15 minutes to cook a pizza, but this tiny, portable one claims to do it in less than two – so we put it to the test.
The Roccbox gets up to 500°C, and having started life as a crowdfunding project, it has convenient little features like fold out legs for easy storage, and a strap you can use to carry it to and from your mate's place.
Only big enough for one pizza at a time, the cooking process is fast but involved, and I’m not gonna lie, it took me a few tries to get the hang of it. What I learnt is that you definitely want lots of flour on your base so it doesn’t stick to the stone (or the paddle, or your hands for that matter).
Then you’ll want to invest in a long pair of tongs, as you need to turn the pizza every 30 seconds as it cooks because the back of the oven is a lot hotter than the door.
My other hot tip is to prep a few pizza bases in advance so you have them ready to cook one after another. This way you get a batch of pizzas cooked in one go, and can turn the gas down (or off) while you eat so you don’t burn too much fuel.
Once you get the hang of it, it’s actually loads of fun to use. The only downside is the price, because at $900 a pop, this bad boy isn’t in everybody’s price range.
