Aussie woman sickened by find inside smoothie: 'I felt so violated'

The 27-year-old immediately spat out but says she's 'unsure if she will ever recover'.

An Aussie woman thought her housemate was playing “some sick joke” on her when she swigged back her blueberry smoothie and ended up with a huntsman spider in her mouth.

Kimberley Hooper had just got home from night shift as a deckhand in Gladstone in central Queensland recently when she went to make her regular drink before getting into bed.

“I made the smoothie — with blueberries, ice, coconut water, protein powder and collagen — and then grabbed my cup that was next to the sink and just poured my smoothie into it and went downstairs to drink it,” she told Yahoo News Australia.

“I think I put it down for a minute mid-way through and did something then came back to finish it, but on the last mouthful I felt this weird chunk in my mouth.

“I literally felt it out with my tongue and thought, ‘Hmm that's weird, this smoothie only has frozen blueberries in it and I didn't put anything that should be that shape or texture in my smoothie’.”

So the 27-year-old spat it back into the cup.

“Once I saw the shape that was still covered in purple smoothie and moved it around a bit in my cup to reveal it further, I was like ‘NUPPPP, that can't be what I think it is’,” she explained.

“Initially I was like, ‘Is that a crab?’, and then I was like: ‘holy s**t, is it a spider???’. Like surely not.”

But after tipping out her smoothie onto the pavers in her back garden, Hooper’s worst nightmares were confirmed

“I hosed it off to reveal a huntsman that had just been in my mouth!” she said.

“I felt so ill and violated and very much wanted to leave the earth in that moment.”

Funnily enough, Hooper said she and her housemate had recently received an arachnid visitor.

“A day prior I had seen that very spider in the lounge room and requested that my housemate forcibly remove it,” she explained. “He refused and named him Dave.

The 27-year-old believes ‘Dave’ — who is fortunately not dangerously venomous — crawled into her cup, which had been left on the sink facing up, and she just didn’t notice him when she poured the smoothie in and accidentally drowned him.

Although she had her doubts about her housemate.

“I asked him if it was some sick joke that he had killed Dave and planted him in my cup for a laugh, but he assured me that wasn’t the case,” she said.

“Anyway, it’s safe to say that my housemate hasn't heard the end of it and I wholeheartedly blame him.

“I’m just so glad that I didn't chew him or something before I realised that he wasn’t meant to be in there and spat him out whole, thank god.

“But it makes me feel so ill thinking about it. I’m unsure if I’ll ever recover.”

After sharing her horror online, Hooper’s video has since racked up more than 28,400 views on TikTok.

“I would need therapy after this!” one person wrote. “I would be crying for days.”

“My arachnophobia could never recover from this,” someone else said. “I would have passed out,” another commented.

While others poured out their own terrifying experiences.

“I ate a baby gecko last week,” one person said. “[I] feel your pain.”

“The other morning I had a coffee outside [and] crunched down on what I thought was an ice cube,” another wrote. “[It] was in fact two flies.”

“I sipped up a whole slug and didn’t notice!” someone else added, while another commented: “My god this is bringing back memories of me eating half a bread roll of maggots.”
