Teams went "back to school" to please the fussiest of customers – kids, or risk facing a sudden death cook-off!
"Kids are scary, especially in packs," Kelly worried when judges revealed they'd be cooking lunch for 200 primary school kids.
Annie wondered if cheese-and-vegemite sandwiches would suffice, but judges stressed their meals had to please parents too – meaning healthy options!
"I've probably spent more time waiting in the principal's office than in class," admitted Harry as he and Christo made lamb pita pockets with "frickles" (fried pickles).
Paul and Blair peppered their prep time with smack talk at Harry and Christo. "What's the first thing kids take off their burger at McDonald's?" Paul heckled from nearby. "Pickles!"
"They pick their nose!" he told the kids.
But the kids were undeterred, and while judges enjoyed the frickles, they declared the lamb overcooked. "They're gonna have to step it up," said Manu.
Chloe & Kelly's turkey nachos with spelt chips and BBQ corn salsa pleased both the kids and the judges, with simple, well-balanced tastes. Pete dubbed it "the dish of the day", meaning the girls finally beat out arch-rivals Helena & Vikki, whose chicken burger with spinach balls was a confusion of flavours.
But it was Uel & Shannelle the kids love best. They swarmed to the wisecracking newlyweds' table for fish fingers with roast potato salad and were entertained by Uel's while-you-wait "Dad Jokes".
"We're going in as if we've already won," was Carly's positivity power-up, but the sun made mush of the pastry for their pizza pinwheels with root vegetable chips. Poor presentation meant they could neither attract the kids or please the judges.
"I don't think it looks appetising whatsoever," Pete frowned, while Manu sad the pinwheel was too doughy.
