Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's recent trip to Nigeria has reportedly left King Charles and Prince William "absolutely furious", a royal expert has claimed.

Tom Quinn told The Mirror that Harry and Meghan's visit to Nigeria "confirmed the worst fears" for Charles and William, saying it is "a bold statement that [Harry and Meghan] refuse to accept they are no longer working royals".

"Everything you might expect from an official royal visit was there – the receptions, the visits to schools and charities, to wounded soldiers and the disabled," he added. "Meghan and Harry's speeches and their whole attitude has been designed to give the impression that they are still fully paid-up royals and William and his father King Charles don't like it one bit."

The expert continued, "For Charles and William, it's as if Meghan and Harry are saying, 'We don't need your permission to be working royals – we will do it on our own terms whenever and wherever we like.'"

Harry and Meghan were invited by the Nigerian military for the three-day trip, with sources confirming to MailOnline that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex were "visiting Nigeria in a private capacity", and the UK government was "not involved in arranging or facilitating their programme".

While it might have looked like an official visit, like the ones they did before stepping down as senior royals, Charlotte Wace wrote in The Times that it was actually quite different.

"The press pack had been replaced by one reporter and one photographer," she said. "Most significantly they were representing themselves rather than the monarch and were free to choose their schedule.

"There appeared to be fewer formalities and more selfies compared with trips from the past."
