Prince William and Kate Middleton have shared a new portrait of Princess Charlotte to celebrate their daughter's ninth birthday. The photo was taken by the Princess of Wales, who also recently shared a snap of Prince Louis, who turned six last month.

The photo features a subtle nod to the late Queen Elizabeth II, with Charlotte posing for the photo at their home in Windsor, with the young Princess leaning against a fence with flowers.

According to The Mirror's Royal Editor Russell Myers, the flowers are the Clematis Elizabeth and were named in honour of the late Queen.

"Happy 9th Birthday, Princess Charlotte!" the caption on Instagram read. "Thank you for all of the kind messages today."

Royal fans loved the snap, with one user writing, "I love that your mom is still taking the family portraits - happy birthday sweetness."

"Happy birthday to Princess Charlotte ❤️. It's a beautiful picture 😍," another said. "She is growing up really fast. Wishing her an amazing day, surrounded by loved ones."

Kate and her family have spent some time away from the public eye since making the announcement she is battling cancer. Prince William has recently returned to public duties, but Kate is still taking time off to rest and undergo chemotherapy.
