So you've been working from home just like me. We have a ton of meetings, and we need to look decent in these Zoom calls, right?

Today I'm super excited because I'm joined by Nikki Nelms, a celebrity hairstylist who is behind some of the most iconic hairstyles from your favorite A-list stars such as Solange, Janelle Monáe, and even Zoe Kravitz.

Hi! How are you? I'm so excited to have you here.

NIKKI NELMS: Hi. Thank you for having me.

NURYS CASTILLO: You know, everybody is on Zoom call, and, like, look at this hair. It needs help. I am ready. I am going to do them with you, and I'm excited to see what we got [INAUDIBLE] today.

NIKKI NELMS: So the first look is super easy, something, you know, kind of quick and cute when you want to be, like, a little different, you know, for your Zoom call. I have these amazing Planet Goody headbands here. Super soft and comfortable. This is what we'll be using.

What we'll do is we'll pull out some sections in the front, maybe about an inch and a half in length. We'll pull out one in the front. We'll skip a space and then do another one on the side and then another on the other side. So there will be, like, three straps that are hanging. If you have some, like, little clips just to separate it or a hairpin, you can do that. Just grab your sections. Get creative. That's what we're all about.

So now everything else that you didn't use, we're going to pull that into, like, the most snatched ponytail that you can. You can use a nice powder brush. I'm going to use the Total Texture Intelliwave Detangler. It's very gentle on your hair.

I'm going to use the Total Texture of super elastics. Makes for a really, really secure ponytail.

You're doing really good. You can-- and placement is, like, preference. That's a cute place.

So now we're going to grab the headbands. So we're going to put the headband.

NURYS CASTILLO: Ooh.

NIKKI NELMS: We're going to incorporate the headband and create, like, a basket-weave look.

Now we'll take each piece that we left out, and then you can wrap it around your ponytail. You're doing an amazing job.

NURYS CASTILLO: Oh, thank you. I'm trying.

NIKKI NELMS: And secure it with a hair pan or bobby pin. And then we'll just take each piece and repeat. So this is a way to match your outfit or look like you put a little more effort into it.

NURYS CASTILLO: Your type of hair is very creative.

NIKKI NELMS: Every moment with every client is different. You know, the vibe on set, I incorporate all of into my technique and what I think the client would like for that look.

NURYS CASTILLO: All right, I got something going on.

NIKKI NELMS: OK.

NURYS CASTILLO: I love it. Yes. That's perfect. That takes not even five minutes. It was so easy.

NIKKI NELMS: Not even five minutes.

So for the next one, I'll intentionally go up a little higher just because I want to see it. You can add a little product if you have little flyaways. I'll add a little-- a little water.

NURYS CASTILLO: You have an amazing model. She's very nice and quiet.

NIKKI NELMS: She's so sweet. She's so sweet. She's been here with me through it all. You know, she's quiet. She's really quiet. And sometimes she loses her head, but other than that, we get along.

NURYS CASTILLO: Yep.

NIKKI NELMS: I can tell that's where you like your ponies. Like--

NURYS CASTILLO: Yep.

NIKKI NELMS: --not too high, not too low. OK, so we can do that. So you grab another elastic. This time we'll use scrunchies. And I have the Planet Goody scrunchies, and I'll use, like, three. I'm going to use three at one time.

NURYS CASTILLO: I'm going to go real, like, a bunch of colors this time.

NIKKI NELMS: OK. Oh, that looks nice. It goes well with your shirt.

OK, so what we're going to do is take-- kind of keep them stacked so that you can see them, like, individually. We're just going to slide it on there and sit them. So when you get them on there, we'll just position them so each color gets its own shine. Take your brush, and do a little back brushing just to give it a little bit of, like, volume at the base.

NURYS CASTILLO: Does that help with the flipping the hair?

NIKKI NELMS: It gives it, like, a nice structured base so that you can form the hair more than just, like, you know, take a chance on how it falls. It's more intentional.

I'm just going to finger roll it and make, like, one huge pink curl in the back. I'm going to bring that around. So this is like a three-pin method-- one in the back, one on each side just to secure it.

NURYS CASTILLO: I love that. Let's look at the back. It looks amazing.

NIKKI NELMS: Not want to make your ponytail so neat or pull of a few sides and wispies. Getting creative with using things like headbands and scrunchies just to be at home, comfortable, and still look nice, you know?

NURYS CASTILLO: For these hairstyles, is it good to have unwashed hair? You want to have more fluff and airiness. Yeah, you might want clean hair for that. These, not so much. You don't need them.

NIKKI NELMS: That's the thing I love about the Goody brand. They have tools that you can use for every stage of your hair. Do you just want your hair slicked back? You can use a nice headband and a scrunchie.

NURYS CASTILLO: What do you recommend every woman should have in their at-home kit when it comes to hair, for every hair texture?

NIKKI NELMS: A nice paddle brush detangling or a nice detangling comb, just something to help you get through it all.

NURYS CASTILLO: Tell everyone where they can find you so if they want to see more of your amazing hair styles?

NIKKI NELMS: @NikkiNelms on Instagram. Stop by and say hi.
