District attorney Kevin Hayden called the investigation "one of the most complex, unusual and perplexing that this office has ever encountered". Investigators don't know whether the four babies - thought to be 37 to 40 weeks old - were born alive, which was part of the reason not to bring criminal charges, Mr Hayden said.

A farmer arrested for shooting dead a suspected burglar in a remote farmhouse has been named locally as Robert Lomas. He was today (Fri) still being quizzed by detectives over the shooting of Marcus Smith, 19, during the second break-in at his property in less than 10 hours. Smith's mum Kerry, 51, uploaded a photo of her with her son on social media which prompted an outpouring of sympathy from well-wishers. One wrote: "I’m truly heartbroken. Sending love to you all." Another said: "We are so shocked and so heartbroken, nothing can express how deeply sorry we are."
