High school student Reece Mastin’s family moved to Australia six years ago from England to escape the dreary weather. His life is certainly a lot brighter now thanks to his killer voice which blew the judges away at auditions. The 16-year-old’s rocking rendition of Rooster’s ‘Come Get Some’ left Guy declaring him a potential winner. “Everyone will love you,” he said, “you are so young but you are so good.”
Reece, who lives in Greenwith, South Australia, lists Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler as his idol. “He’s been doing it for 40 years. That’s what I want to do. He’s amazing.”
He decided from an early age singing was for him. “I was only eight when I decided I wanted to sing. I did a school thing and was singing Robbie Williams. It’s something I love doing.”
He says his biggest strength is his individuality. “I don’t fit the normal stereotype. You have the Justin Biebers, the Miley Cyruses and I’m completely differently. I’ve always loved rock and roll. It’s something that’s dying. Hopefully I’ll be able to bring it back.”
He’s built a strong rapport with his mentor Guy: “He’s such a great person and an amazing musician.” Ready to rock, he says he can’t wait for the upcoming live shows. “I really want to get in there. This is what we’ve been waiting for. It’ll be nerve wracking but it’s going to be lots of fun.”
The Year 11 Golden Grove High School student can play everything from guitar and drums to bass and piano. Aside from music, his other main love is soccer. “I play, eat football. It’d be great if I could be a footballer as well as a singer. But I’m no David Beckham.”He has already recorded his own EP and played in several bands. His ambition now is simple: ”I want to be a rock and roll legend.”
