Anna Hutchison

There’s absolutely no role stereotyping in the career of actor Anna Hutchison.

“I’ve been pretty lucky with the parts I’ve played,” says the bubbly New Zealander. “I do know that.”

All the same, it’s not just luck that has made Anna the busy working actor she is. It takes determination, passion and talent to succeed in the film and TV business.

Anna was first seen on screen on the long running New Zealand series Shortland Street when she was 15 and it wasn’t long before she scored lead roles in US TV series Power Rangers: Jungle Fury and Ride with the Devil in New Zealand.

She is now into her third season playing Amy Smart in the successful NZ series Go Girls and has also appeared in local and overseas productions such as Legend of the Seeker (US), Sea Patrol, Underbelly and Panic at Rock Island.

And now she inhabits the world of Emilia Fife, the sweet innocent daughter of Hopetoun’s mayor, who falls for the farrier turned bushranger Conrad.

Anna is equally excited and inspired by Wild Boys and enjoys the camaraderie of working with all the show’s male leads. “There’s always a lot of boy time. Zoe (Ventoura) and I will often go to set and meet them when they’ve had three days together, all boys. So they’ll start the day with the rudest jokes and then they’ll be like, oh that’s right. We’ve got girls on the set now.”

Alexander England, who plays her love interest Conrad, has impressed her no end.

“Alex is such a lovely man. He’s really confident and he knows his character so well. He’s really incredible and I’m very lucky to be working with him.” Many of her scenes are also with Jeremy Sims who plays Fuller.

“Jeremy’s funny,” she says. “He can be quite cheeky. They’re completely different men. That’s what’s really cool about this show. Every single one of those men is completely different.

“What’s really great is being challenged by the guys. They have such strong and great ideas, it inspires you to be better. To lift. Even though I’ve got to be the young sweet girl, the challenge is to take their energy and maintain your character. But it’s really, really fun.”

When Hutchison, who grew up in Auckland, is not acting, she’s studying for her degree in business and has a passion for surfing. “I like any sport or activity. Hiking has taken over at the moment. I really enjoy Sydney because it’s got such great bushland.”

In 2012 Anna will be seen in her first US feature film role starring opposite Chris Hemsworth in MGM’s Cabin in the Woods.

Who’s your favourite Wild Boy?
Ian McShane from Deadwood. I think he’s the most amazing actor and he was completely wild in Deadwood.
