Is racism alive and well in Australia?

Renown brain surgeon Dr Charlie Teo says that racism is Australia is widespread and his speech on Australia Day may reiterate this.

Dr Teo says that his own daughter has been the subject of racism.

"My daughter... doesn't like Australia Day," he says. "She has in the past... been told by drunk Australians to go home because she looks Chinese."

He also says:

"I don't quite like it when I hear politicians reassuring the Indians there's no racism in Australia. That's bull---t."

How widespread do you think racism is in Australia?

The easiest way to get your head around racism is to acknownedge that EVERYONE IS A RACIST. We are not born that way but become one very shortly therafter. Anyone who looks different from our parents gets our attention as a person apart. We are then exposed to people who are old, speak differently, are of different colours, have different facial features etc, etc. As a grownup, we react exactly the way we did as a child. Education and experience help but we can never truly get over that first reaction to someone different. Any one who says they are not a racist is deluding theselves. Of course some are more racist than others. The extremes are awful and should be guarded against. However our natural mistrust of different people will never go away. Unfortunately.

As a mixed race person myself, and grown up the australian way in multicultural schools and towns, yet as an adult lived and travelled to many countries., . I personally have found rascism directed toward me by the new australians and native australians. I personally tried to connect with all cultures , only to be rejected, because a. i am a woman(whom has opinions)b. because im not aboriginal, c. because im not muslim..beside these few unfortunate moments everyone born on this planet have behaved beautifully...its customer service that is poor, to all cultures..

Racism is a world wide issue & it offends me that Australians are targeted all the time over this issue It is unfortunate that do have a small minority of drunken racist yobbos. Can you tell me that I can travel the globe & not be the victim of racism? I don’t think so & I would be a lot more likely to be a victim of more serious atrocities.
