Was Warnie right? Should cyclists be registered?

"Cyclists on the road are a blight on the landscape," - Howard Sattler.

Cricketer Shane Warne entered the fray last night when he tweeted a long rant about a confrontation he had with a cyclist on a Melbourne road.

Read the rant below.

Should cyclists be registered?

Warne's rant on Twitter
guys stay with me here its important... so there i was driving home after a training session at the mcg.. pulled up at the lights, felt a..
thump on my boot, looked in mirror a bike rider hit my car then held onto my car to pull himself through the traffic, lights change.....
he pulls out in front of me whacks my bonnet with his hand and pulls out in front of all the traffic, i yell out hey buddy what the hell ...
are you doing he abuses me i say get off the road, he stops in front of me and holds up traffic and just stays on his bike ! so, now i.....
can't move nor anyone else, i go to slowly move around him and he just moves with me, yep clipped his tyre and he then abuses me some more.
anyway, i drive off he rides off and everyone was shaking their head at this bike rider as he was being very dangerous. he was very lucky
that i was being polite and careful and the drivers around him otherwise if anyone decided to be an idiot then he was in real trouble.
its amazing how things pan out, i have only been saying recently please bike riders obey the road rules and keep it safe for everyone
it is a serious issue , please govt cn you do something about this situation, surely we can all get along unfortunately its 1 or 2 ...

Yes bike riders are pests on the road, but they should definately NOT have to pay registration. That's just stupid, no one will ride bikes anymore. Bikes are bikes, not cars!!! They do not have petrol tanks and they can be ridden on a bike path. I think cyclists just need to learn some 'road etiquette' and respects drivers. I myself used to ride a road bike both for leisure and competitively and was always aware of drivers on the road, ensuring i never rode next to another cyclist, always behind or in front so to give cars the room they require. Cyclists seem to think they can share the car lanes with cars, no, they need to stick to the bikes lanes provided. This will prevent accidents and abuse!!! Common sense!!!

Cyclists use the road they should be identifiable and contribute to general revenue like the rest of us.

Sane is right all bike riders should be registered and insured , as i am a truck driver on country roads and in city they ride in the middle of the road and wont move over so you can pass them . if they have an accident with some one and cause damage with no insurance the other person has to pay for repairs them self . the bike rider get the of without paying , why should the public motor drivers have to pay for the use of the road and not cyclists . thanks John Carroll
