The race that stops a nation is now the subject of a new Aussie movie.
The Cup tells the true story of Damien Oliver’s triumphant win on Media Puzzle in the 2002 Melbourne Cup, just days after his brother Jason was killed in a racing accident.
The film stars a host of well known Aussies including Stephen Curry (known for his spot-on performance as Graham Kennedy in The King), Daniel MacPherson, Jodi Gordon, Shaun Micallef, Tom Burlinson and the late Bill Hunter.
Director Simon Wincer - who made Phar Lap in 1983 - is passionate about horses, telling Fifi Box he goes horseriding every day on his farm. 100 horses were used during the shoot, and Stephen Curry - who plays Damien Oliver - started learning to ride two years before production started.
