FAQs

Why am I being asked to switch to Freeview?

Between 2010 and 2013 the analogue free-to-view TV signals in Australia will be switched off and replaced with digital only signals (for more information on the switchover, go to the Digital Switchover taskforce website. What does that mean for you? Well, to keep watching TV and all your favourite shows for free, you’ll need to upgrade your current TV to receive the new signal (by connecting it to a set top box or other digital recording device), or buy a new HD TV with the technology built in to receive the signal.
Digital is just another way or transmitting content from the TV networks to your television. It uses improved technology that has some additional benefits over the analogue transmission system, including:

1) Better sound and picture quality

2) You can get MORE CHANNELS! Digital is a more efficient way of broadcasting, so the networks can squeeze more channels into the same space

3) IT’S FREE+

+ Once you have digital capable equipment.

How do I get Freeview and the new digital channels?

To start watching Freeview you’ll need a high definition digital television. Or, you can simply connect your analogue or standard definition digital television to a high definition set top box or other high definition digital device. If you already have one of these, you’re ready to go!
If your equipment isn’t working, try one of the following:

• Re-tune your TV

• Check your cables are in good condition and connected properly

• If you use an indoor antenna now, you may need to replace it with an external antenna to get a reliable digital signal

• Check your external antenna. You may need the help of your local antenna installer.

• In most cases a new aerial isn’t needed, but if the problem still persists, your older aerial may need replacing. Check with your local antenna installer.

Is it really free?

Yes. Freeview is free-to-view TV on the digital platform. Once you have the digital equipment to receive the signal, all the channels & shows are free. No contracts, no fees, no ongoing costs.
