It's not surprising that ratings have dropped significantly.
I used to watch Packed to the Rafters religiously, but now it falls into the category of shows I'll only watch if there's nothing else on other channels that appeal.
The writers have already dealt with a lot of obvious popular story lines: i.e marriage, separation, birth, death. Now they are scratching around for plot lines, and unfortunately, the writers have not come up with the goods. From day one, there was always going to be a limited number of credible story lines that could be applied to a single extended family group.
John Howard's character upsets the whole dynamic of the show and sits badly (a bit like how the MRU instantly killed All Saints). Now his granddaughter has arrived, and her introduction was so annoying that I reached for the remote and started watching something else.
When writers run out of ideas, the network should take a decision to end a popular show on a high, rather than persevere for several seasons too many, allowing the show die a long agonising death.
Packed to the rafters was always a good idea for two or three series - that should have been the initial plan, and that's where it should be left - with positive memories, not a painful exit.
