A toddler who tragically drowned in swampland in Melbourne’s southeast has been remembered for his “big smile” and “fun-loving” demeanour.

Ali Aminzadah, 4, was staying with family members in Officer when he tragically drowned in a suburban lagoon on Sunday afternoon.

La Trobe MP Jason Woods said the death was “devastating to the family, friends and the wider Afghanistan community”.

“(We) must not forget emergency services workers as it’s an awful day for all involved on this tragic event,” he said.

In a statement, a spokesperson for the family said they had travelled from Swan Hill to visit relatives in Officer.

The spokesperson told Nine on Monday Ali had just started kindergarten and was always running around.

Emergency services were initially called to Lagoon Row about 5pm on Sunday after Ali disappeared.

The four-year-old boy was found unresponsive in the water and tragically died at the scene.

The death is not being treated as suspicious and a report will be prepared for the coroner.
