Firefighters have worked for an hour to get a boat fire under control, after it erupted into flames on the water.

Fire and Rescue NSW told 9News emergency responders had been called to Birkenhead Marina about 10am on Saturday, near where a motor yacht was in flames while floating in waters near Balmain.

The first crews had to board a NSW Police boat to reach the fire, and a water pump was required to dampen the blaze, 9News reported.

Firefighters fought the blaze from a tugboat, vessel was

towed to Birkenhead Point where the flames were ultimately extinguished.

The inferno was under control by 11am, and specialist crews are now investigating the cause of the blaze.

No one was injured in the fire, but The Daily Telegraph reported one man who had helped fight the fire had suffered minor smoke inhalation.
He was treated at the scene.
