Ricky Gervais to host the Golden Globes

" The Office star and co-creator Ricky Gervais has been announced as the host of the 67th Annual Golden Globe Awards in January.

"Not only is this the biggest Hollywood celebration of the industry, which includes both film and TV, but also an environment where I feel I can get free reign as a host," Gervais said in a statement. "I have resisted many other offers like this, but there are just some things you don't turn down."

Unlike the Oscars and the Emmys, the Golden Globes traditionally don't have a host — Gervais if the first person to front the star-studded ceremony since 1995.

"We are delighted to have Ricky Gervais as the host on our show," said Philip Berk, president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the organisation whose members vote for the Golden Globes.

Gervais should prove a dab hand at hosting the Golden Globes: the British comedian has won three of the awards for his work on The Office and Extras .

The Invention of Lying , the comedy film co-written, co-directed and starring Gervais, is released in cinemas on November 26.
