"The 2008 movie sequel The X-Files: I Want to Believe may have bombed at the box office, but star David Duchovny still reckons there's hope for a third film in the sci-fi franchise.

Duchovny says that 2012 — the year when the Mayan calendar supposedly predicts is the end of the world — would be the perfect release date for another X-Files movie. In the final episode of The X-Files TV series, which aired in 2002, it was hinted that 2012 will mark the date of an alien invasion.

"As far as the X-Files movie I'd like to do next, if we get a chance to do it, would be a return to the heart and soul of the mythology, which is the alien-oriented conspiracy," said Duchovny, aka The X Files ' Fox Mulder, in an interview with the website The Daily Beast. "I think it's natural for The X-Files to have another movie in 2012, so we'll see if we get to do it."

Duchovny says he's not bothered by the lukewarm critical response to I Want to Believe .

"I was happy with it," he said. "I have nothing but respect for [ The X-Files creator] Chris Carter and the writing staff."

Duchovny currently stars in the raunchy drama Californication , which airs on Network Ten."
