"No wonder American Idol judge Simon Cowell is so good at insulting people — he's been dispensing putdowns since he was just five years old.

Cowell's 82-year-old mother, Julie — a former dancer — has revealed that her son dropped his first criticism as a child in response to a hat she was wearing.

"I bought a new hat and asked him if I looked nice in it," Mama Cowell told Yours magazine. "He replied, 'You look like a poodle'."

Despite her son's acid tongue, Mrs Cowell doesn't think he deserves the "nasty judge" title he's been lumped with over the years.

"It would only upset me if he really was a nasty person. Simon isn't nasty — he's just honest," she said, adding that she doesn't let him get away with anything genuinely mean. "I'll tell him if I think he's said the wrong thing to a contestant."

Cowell is a well-practiced meanie: in addition to American Idol , he also acts as a judge on the UK series The X Factor and Britain's Got Talent .

American Idol will return to FOX8 in early 2010."
