Pat, are you serious? The contestants and judges are doing the right thing because that's how real professional chefs in restaurants work. they always keep their hands clean and always wash after handling raw meat and fish.

@Gail you obviously don't get out much as most chefs or kitchen staff don't wear gloves.

Do you wear gloves when you cook?  If not, I don't fancy eating at your house either.

It's just not practical for chefs to wear gloves and I dare say they do have much better hand washing techniques than doctors.

I would more likely be bothered with latex allergies from excessive wearing of gloves.  It does not bother me the fact that they do not wear gloves. Never had food poisoning or similar here.

@ Carol Sorry but both are poor examples as you would wash both items before use at home just as they do in professional kitchens.

Yes Little Dee I rinse my meat products except mince, although my grandmother even washed mince. I realise cooking will kill any germs but I still wash it.

seriously??... you rinse your meat products??.. never heard of it... what are you washing away??... bacteria dies at certain temps.. by washing it you aren't achieving anything except maybe a loss of flavour... and contaminating your sink with bacteria from the meat...

Gail I would imagine you are part of a very small and little known meat washers group out there!

Total waste of time because it would achieve nothing except for perhaps a loss of flavour with the meat.

I only ever wear gloves at home when I'm mixing up a glorious meat kebab mix with plenty of garlic, chillies and spices...if I didn't wear them to do that, my hands would smell for a week!!

Gail, no one wears gloves in a commercial kitchen they wash there hands! Seem's there are many people not very bright on here. I would be more concerned about your GP not wearing gloves!

Lol. I don't know that it will be possible for Gail to ever forget the why they don't where gloves. About 15 people have provided the same response as though it clarifies the reason more each time.
YOU GUIZ! TSM! UR SO SMART.

actually all chefs and food service employees in health care facilities are required to wear gloves...it takes maybe 5 seconds to change em...that's it..and i would expect chefs to use gloves because they are cooking for other people to were as at home i'm cooking for myself...some people jus dont like the idea of someone's elses bare hands touching there food washed or not...and  there is nothing wrong with rinsing meats i have heard lots of people say they do it this includes butchers, chefs and even HEALTH DEPARTMENT EMPLOYEES although you dont have to i completey understand why someone would..have any of taken food safety classes?bcuz i never knew so many people were offended by cautious food handling...
