Gail, as has been discussed to death on this forum, chefs in restaurants do not wear gloves, they would spend more time changing gloves than cooking, it's called cross contamination.

How the hell would you wash your hands? Do you wear the same pair of gloves after touching raw meat without changing? And if you do change gloves, could you imagine how many times you would have to change them?
It's just not practical.

Hey Everyone Gail has a good point, I know it isn't practical to wear gloves in a lot of situations....BUT food preparation especially on television should be seen doing the right thing. Don't put Gail down for just wondering.

Oh Gail, precious child.  My esteemed colleagues have pipped me to the post, but it's fortunate that they did, because this thread may have gone unnoticed and you may have escaped uninsulted.  I'm glad there are so many boring know it alls on constant vigilant watch here take up arms when need arises.  Pat, I'm appalled that you take such a namby pamby attitude with such insubordination.  Defending Gail against unnecessary put-downs?   What next?  Pfft.

Gloves would be pretty useless in the kitchen. As soon as you put gloves on and touch something they are no longer sterile.

Why would you expect chef's to wear gloves if you don't in your own kitchen? I bet most restaurant kitchens are more sterile than in a home and I suspect most chef's have better hand washing techniques too!

Pat, are you serious? The contestants and judges are doing the right thing because that's how real professional chefs in restaurants work. they always keep their hands clean and always wash after handling raw meat and fish.

@Gail you obviously don't get out much as most chefs or kitchen staff don't wear gloves.

Do you wear gloves when you cook?  If not, I don't fancy eating at your house either.

It's just not practical for chefs to wear gloves and I dare say they do have much better hand washing techniques than doctors.

I would more likely be bothered with latex allergies from excessive wearing of gloves.  It does not bother me the fact that they do not wear gloves. Never had food poisoning or similar here.

@ Carol Sorry but both are poor examples as you would wash both items before use at home just as they do in professional kitchens.
