During My Kitchen Rules' second to last week, eliminated teams fought for a chance to return to the main competition. In Comeback Kitchen, VIC's Kerrie and Craig, TAS's Mick and Matt, NSW's Ashlee and Sophia and VIC's Angela and Melina gave it their all... and gave us some big surprises.Ice queen Sophia dished out phrases like “there's no other team that is worthy [of winning]” and “we're going to pimp [our apple crumble] up”, only to break down over whether she could scale and fillet 40 Sea Bream on time. Even Ashlee, her best friend since childhood, had never seen her so vulnerable.Mick and Matt – who cooked Roasted Venison, Braised Cabbage and Broccolini and a Double Chocolate Tart with Raspberries - won and returned to Kitchen HQ, where the final four teams received the bombshell that their competition was coming back. After all five teams created an amuse-bouche (a one bite dish), the weakest two, Mick and Matt and VIC's Sam and Chris, went to sudden death. The latter headed home after their Braised Beef Cheeks with Pumpkin and Spinach Ravioli and Baby Carrots awarded them 44/60 compared to Mick and Matt's 49/60 for their Chocolate Pecan Meringue Cake with Coffee Dates and Vanilla Sour Cream. In the first semi-final matchup, NSW's Luke and Scott wowed the judges with their entree of Stuffed Quail with Walnut, Fig and Goats Cheese Salad and Chocolate Chilli Torte with Orange Mascarpone and Espresso Sauce dessert but oversalted their main of Fennel Sword Fish, Gremolata, Beetroot Purée with a Grapefruit and Celery Salad. They scored 41/60 and were simply no competition for Dan and Steph, whose near-perfect Deconstructed Whiting Nicoise Salad and Babi Guling with Blood Sausage and Snake Beans was only let down by their undercooked Frangipane Tart with Yoghurt Sorbet. They scored 46/60.The tension increased during the second semi-final with Jake and Elle bickering (“stop bossing me around”, “stop talking to me like I'm an imbecile”) and Mick having a meltdown over undercooked muscles and clams that nearly ruined their entree. It was a close race: Mick and Matt's delicious Smoked Eel Chowder almost matched Jake and Elle's Smoked Kingfish with Caper Gremolata but the father and son's Crusted Lamb with Parsnip Purée and Roasted Bullhorn Capsicum main was undercooked while the siblings smashed it with a perfect Rabbit Confit with Crumbed Kidneys, Soft Polenta and Chervil and Parsley Salad. The Tasmanians scored 44/60 while Jake and Elle won with 51/60.Next, the two Queensland teams, Dan and Steph and Jake and Elle, go head to head in the MKR grand final. Their challenge? Cooking for 200 people. The prize? $250,000. Tune in Sunday night to see who wins it all.
