Secret Clue 16 - 'The Incident Pt1'

Welcome back to the Lost Secret Clue, where we dig deeper to find the clues and secrets you might've missed to fuel your theories! This week's episode, "The Incident Pt1", gave us our first look at the mysterious Jacob, his unnamed enemy and the side view of the statue, finally revealing her identity. Tawaret, tapestry, tea and touching times throughout...

1977

Showing that she'd grown far more than Sawyer in the three years spent in the past, Juliet took action and freed herself, Sawyer and Kate from their handcuffs, getting them off the sub and on a dinghy back to shore. Sawyer and Kate may've been bantering lightly but Juliet looked like she had finally accepted that she'll never leave the island. They soon found Vincent, Rose and Bernard who'd been living in the jungle avoiding detection for the last three years! Did we just receive our biggest clue for the identities of Adam and Eve, the skeletons found in the caves way back in season one? And now that they've intercepted Jack, Hurley, Jin, Miles and a gunshot-wounded Sayid, will they change their minds about trying to change the past?

JACOB'S VISITS

Kate: Jacob intervenes at a key moment in Kate's childhood as she and her childhood sweetheart Tom are caught shoplifting. Dissuading any punishment, Jacob pays for the lunch box she and Tom would later use as their time capsule, making her promise not to steal again and poking her playfully on the nose. Was he teaching her that crime isn't crime if someone else pays the penalty, a ruthless trait Kate displayed during her bank heist?

Sawyer: Sitting outside the church after his parents' funeral, young James is writing the revenge letter that will drive him until he reaches the island. As his pen runs out Jacob steps forth, seemingly from nowhere, offering both a pen and condolences; he also lightly touches James' fingers as he passes the pen. Moments later, we realise Jacob assisted Sawyer in staying on his path of retribution by allowing him to complete his letter, in turn allowing him to pull his first con by lying about it to his uncle.

Sayid: Discussing where to celebrate their one year wedding anniversary, Sayid and Nadia are interrupted by Jacob as they are about to cross the road. While Sayid remains behind to offer advice, Nadia is mown down in the hit-and-run we learned last season was orchestrated by Widmore. Jacob briefly rests his hand on Sayid's shoulder in comfort, leaving us to ponder three possibilities. Was Jacob "good" in that he saved Sayid, "bad" for letting Nadia die or were they both intended to die and Jacob exerted some form of course correction?

Ilana: Heavily bandaged and bedridden in a Russian hospital, Ilana is visited by a black-clad Jacob. Strangely, the two seem to recognise each other; he apologizes for not coming sooner, she replies she is happy to see her and he asks her for her help. Unlike the rest of Jacob's visits, we don't see him touch Ilana, emphasized by his thick black gloves.

Locke: Jacob sits outside reading Flannery O'Connor's Everything That Rises Must Converge, a book of short stories mostly of dark characters examining and arguing about religion and the role it plays in their lives, a clear link to the opening scene between Jacob and his enemy. Once again we see Locke fall eight stories and break his back, though this time is shockingly different – Locke was quite clearly dead until touched by Jacob, assuring him he'll be alright and sorry that this happened to him. What exactly is Jacob talking about, the fall itself or his later struggles to come?

Sun & Jin: As they take blessings after their wedding ceremony, Sun and Jin are greeted by Jacob speaking in remarkably good Korean. Placing one hand on each of their shoulders, he tells them that their love is special and that they shouldn't take it for granted, words they both came to understand together on the island and live by now they are separated.

2007

When Richard Alpert commented that he noticed a change in Locke, he wasn't kidding. Locke is set on his path, won't be budged and loving every second of it. Just as Widmore did before him, Locke thinks it best to "take care" of any non-Other inhabitants on the island and puts it high on his to-do list.

Learning that Ben must now do all Locke bids or face the wrath of the smoke monster, Locke commands that Ben will instead be the one to kill Jacob, an idea Ben obviously takes exception to. The problem is, Locke raises valid points; after 35 years of faithful service and not even a handshake, Ben received a spinal tumour, a dead daughter and a one-way ticket off the island.

Ilana, Bram and a few other Ajira 316 survivors add Frank to their group once they reach the main island, telling him that they're the good guys, he may be a "candidate" for something and then showing him the contents of their mysterious crate. Could the container hold a second bomb? A time-travel machine? Could it even contain something to fight and capture the smoke monster, Ghostbusters style?

When they arrive at Jacob's cabin, Bram points out the broken ash line. Inside, the cabin was in tatters and all that was of note was part of the tapestry had been weaving earlier, leaving directions by showing the statue. Did Hurley perhaps break the ash seal when he tripped running from the cabin last season? Or could this be part of the reason Claire was called away by Christian, in order to serve Jacob's cause by setting him free? Are they now all at the statue, waiting for Locke?

My first reaction to the container was it's john lockes corpse...only because john didn't seem to be john and even Richard who has seen it all was shocked that he was alive. I didn't share richards surprise as i thought that christian was the same that he had died and the island brought him back to life, but richards persisting that he had never seen anyone raised from the dead convinced me john wasn't john but was in fact jacobs enemy from the begining of the ...

I think Locke has been turned into an Other - like what happened to Ben and the French woman's companions. The boat Jacob and his enemy saw in the beginning was the Black Rock right? But it sounded as if it wasn't the first to arrive. The conversation between them, about the usual pattern when people come to the island was very important! Everyone seems to end up on the side of either Jacob or his un-named enemy. Is this the way they try to kill each other - thru diff people, thr ...

An awesome episode i thought! It's getting complicated with all the different egyption symbols, really old?! does jacob never age the same as richard, freaky! Why would Locke want to kill jacob let alone get ben to do it??

...and as for Locke, I don't think he is really Locke. Remember what Mr Eko's brother said to him before the smoke monster killed him? "What makes you think I am your brother?" Or something like that. I think Locke is really dead, as was Ben's daughter, Clare, Christian, Charlie and any other dead Losties who have appeared again. They are being impersonated by some other force, possibly the smoke monster, who is possibly Jacob's nemesis. The & ...

The statue is not Anubis it is Tawaret. Even though she is a pregnant hippo goddess, she is often shown with sharp teeth like a crocodile, though usually she is uglier and less sveldt than this statue seems to be. Interestingly, one of her roles in ancient Egyptian "theology" is as protectoress of the vulnerable, especially women and children. Is this significant perhaps?? Think of all the references to vulnerable women and children in the series. As someone else has pointed ou ...

Did anyone else notice that Bram was the second person to call Frank a Yahoo? the first being Sawyer in Season 4 ( He didnt seem as upset this time though !) Another Useless fact: how didnt the forest around jacobs hut catch alight when the Ajira / box carriers started created a very big bonfire, is this some island defense to stop the forests catching alight? or does the island just not want to follow what Lapides Says is going to happen
