Secret Clue 13 - 'Some Like It Hoth'

Welcome back to the Lost Secret Clue, where we dig deeper to find the clues and secrets you might've missed to fuel your theories! This week's episode, "Some Like It Hoth" showed that while Miles has literally been haunted by the ghosts of his past his entire life he may have finally found the answers he was searching for. Road trips, ranks smells, re-writes, regrets and return of the riddle...

Through his flashbacks, we quickly learn that Miles suffers serious issues with the fact he never knew his father, and the little he heard from his mother was hardly encouraging. Did Lara Chang know Pierre died on the island or did he make them leave the island and lose contact? Is she sick due to experiments on the island, or even due to leaving it?

Thought we've long suspected him not being above faking a conversation with the dead, Miles gave the money back to Mr Gray, telling him "If you wanted your son to know you loved him, you should have told him while he was alive!" Obviously, this case hit a little too close to home for the medium but led to a truly touching moment when Miles witnessed his father reading loving from a polar bear book to the childhood version of himself lovingly.

We also witnessed the test Miles underwent when being recruited by parachuting team leader Naomi Dorrit. She brought him to a restaurant and presents him with a body where he pulled info from the man – his name was Felix, he was working for Widmore and bringing him the fake crash documents. Is this man the source of the documents Tom used to try and convince Michael of Widmore's wrongdoing? Despite having no interest in tracking a serial killer, he couldn't resist the allure of $1.6million. We also learnt the reason behind Miles asking Ben for $3.2million last season; to buy him off, it'll cost you double.

Only one character from last week's episode appeared in this one, and there's a good chance you missed him. When Miles was kidnapped by the van-load of semi-cultish thugs promising answers, the man doing all the speaking was Bram, currently ruling over the Ajira 316 survivors thanks to the guns he and Ilana obtained last week. Even stranger was the fact he used the same question, "what lies in the shadow of the statue?" as a way of determining if Miles was "ready." He laughed at the notion of working for Widmore, but when asked which team he was on, all he'd say was the one that was going to win. Is this the war brewing the Walt had forseen? Are these people working secretly for Ben, possibly without knowing it? Or are they a representative of a unseen third party?

Events around the Swan have certainly taken a turn for the darker, and not just in terms of the fashion. Still in the early stages of construction, the Swan is being built deep in hostile territory and has Radzinksy extremely frazzled. Are they not violating the truce by building there? Miles gleans from Alvarez, the body he was transporting, that a filling had ripped through his skull and blown a hole in his brain due the electromagnetic forces while digging a hole. Secrecy surrounding its location is obviously paramount as Miles must first be inducted into the circle of truth before heading there while Hurley is threatened with polar bear poop-weighing duties if he tells anyone. Things might be about to change for the better with the return of Daniel Faraday from Dharma HQ in Michigan, though his black Swan overalls were ominously dark.

We didn't spend a lot of time inside the Dharma village this episode, but in the little time we did, it was obvious the lie is about to collapse. Roger was certain something foul was afoot after finding Ben missing from Juliet's care, Kate suspiciously offering advice and Jack's reacting defensively to his accusation. Sawyer was forced to knock Phil out, telling Juliet to tie him up, but it won't be long before Roger comes knocking at his door with enough questions and theories to expose them.

Did you notice the Egyptian hieroglyphics Jack rubbed off the classroom chalkboard when talking with Roger? One of lines, when translated, means "Writing of the words of God." Why are the Dharma Initiative kids learning ancient Egyptian? Does this relate to Latin being the enlightened language of the Others?

Why is it important that Miles and Hurley's ability to communicate with the dead happens differently? Miles is only able to glean thoughts up to the moment of death (or the brain dies) while Hurley communicates as if they were still alive yet with knowledge they couldn't possibly have. It's not just an ability to communicate with the dead that links Miles and Hurley as the numbers pop up everywhere in Miles past; 4 on the door, 8 on the rabbit, 3:16 the microwave, 3/16/85 on a cheque and 15 facial piercings on teenage Miles' face.

The number 42, however, does not appear until blurted by Hurley at the Swan site. Psychology professor Daryl Bem is researching the possibilities of precognition. In conventional psychological tests, subjects recall words they've had a chance to study better than words they've only seen briefly. Bem reversed the usual order of events and found that his subjects were significantly more likely to recall words they would study LATER than words they wouldn't study at all. Have the numbers been so important in Hurley's life due to this particular moment imbedding that importance on his subconscious, and is this why they're now so tied to Miles' life as well?

It's great we know where Daniel is now; but where is Claire, and where is Walt? Did Walt's father Michael die on the boat?

I know this episode was mostly about Miles, but the best part of the episode - for me - was the end. DANIEL FARADAY! I don't feel quite as lost when he is around.
