Music Genres
It Takes Two is based around a number of musical genres: ROCK, POP, MUSICALS & MOVIES, MOTOWN, BALLADS, ROCK & ROLL, SWING and COUNTRY.
Rock ROCK
The song should be mid to up-tempo with strong drums and guitar power chords and the vocal performance should match the drive of the instruments. The vocal performance must be powerful and aggressive.

Musical examples of this genre include: April Sun In Cuba – Dragon, No Secrets – The Angels, Summer of 69 – Bryan Adams.

Pop POP
A pop song has a simple melody with an obvious ‘catchy’ chorus. Delivery of the performance should be up-beat and positive.

Musical examples of this genre include: Hit Me Baby One More Time – Britney Spears, Tracks of My Tears – Smokey Robinson, Candle in the Wind – Elton John.

Musicals & Songs from Movies MUSICALS & SONGS FROM MOVIES
The song is usually part of a story and so the singer has to use both the voice and the body for expression.

Musical examples of this genre include: I Say a Little Prayer – My Best Friend's Wedding, Can You Feel the Love – The Lion King.

Soul SOUL
This musical style encompasses rhythm and blues and gospel. Superb vocal expression and emotion is required. The message of soul is that the human spirit is strong.

Musical examples of this genre include: Ain’t No Mountain High Enough – Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell, Reach Out I’ll Be There – The Temptations.

Ballads BALLADS
Often referred to as ‘torch songs’ these are songs of lament, sorrow or sentiment. They are usually quite slow in tempo and often contain a story or have a setting.

Musical examples of this genre include: Don’t Dream it’s over – Crowded House, How Deep is your love – Bee Gees, Sometimes When We Touch – Dan Hill.

Rock'n Roll ROCK 'n ROLL
Rock & Roll is rooted in rhythm and blues and should make the audience want to dance.

Musical examples of this genre include: Blue Suede Shoes – Elvis Presley, Rock Around the Clock – Bill Haley.

Big Band & Swing SWING
Big band/Swing has owing rhythms and medium to fast tempo. Vocals should be smooth, easy and dynamic when necessary.The band is extravagant, loud and very powerful.

Musical examples of this genre include: It Had to Be You – Harry Connick Jnr, Fly Me to the Moon – Frank Sinatra.

Country COUNTRY
Country music is based on the traditional music of the rural South and the cowboy music of the West, whose songs express strong personal emotions. It has it roots in traditional folk music, Celtic music, blues, gospel music and old-time music and evolved rapidly in the 1920s.

Musical examples include I Walk The Line – Johnny Cash, Always On My Mind – Willie Nelson, Crazy – Patsy Cline.
