Spencer has always 'had it'. Even as a child, he had a quality that turned heads and made him stand out from the crowd. He’s always been genuine and confident, alive and enthusiastic. Great at sport, he would help the less gifted with their training. He’s a man’s man and a woman’s man and both genders seek him out for advice. He’s completely sure of himself and when Spencer is around, a good time is had by all.
What Spencer didn’t count on was Maddy insisting they run away. It put him in a difficult position, whereby he felt the need to take on responsibility for her wellbeing. And should that wellbeing be compromised, Spencer will feel the burden of guilt enormously.
When Spencer and Maddy arrive in Summer Bay they’ve been on the run for a while, consequently they are forced to beg, borrow and steal to survive. When Maddy falls quite ill, she and Spencer meet Roo and Harvey, turning up on their doorstep.
As Roo becomes a trusted friend, Maddy explains that she and Spencer are not brother and sister, but are in fact boyfriend and girlfriend. Spencer’s brother Chris comes to Summer Bay, and begins to disrupt their relationship as he becomes a third wheel. In the end, Spencer and Maddy break up.
Sasha declares her love for Spencer not long after, and they hold off telling Maddy about their new relationship. As time passes, Spencer’s relationship with Sasha grows, as does his relationship with this brother Chris. Spencer and Sasha go through a lot of ups and downs but none more significant than Spencer’s battle with bipolar. Even though Sasha tries to support him through it all, Spencer decides to stop taking the medication the doctors have prescribed for him.
Chris discovers his brother is not taking his medication, becomes worried and confronts him over it. Spencer reacts in a bad way and the brothers begin to fight, resulting in Spencer collapsing from the anger and frustration. Sasha sticks by Spencer and he decides to help himself holistically - taking interest in Serenity Lodge, the cult in which the twins escaped from.

It was his own brush with danger that offered Andrew Morley the best insight into Spencer's storyline dealing with Bipolar Disorder.
Characters Maddy and Spencer are not siblings, they have run away for love!
There's nothing like a good 'love triangle' to heighten the drama in the Bay. Ruby fought to win Romeo's love from Indi and Ricky had to compete with Charlie's ghost.
Bianca's nervous about returning to school and leaving Darcy unsettled. Roo and Harvey prepare to break the bad news to Maddy and Spencer.
