Zac Macquire

Played by Charlie Clausen.

Zac is the middle child of loving parents who have always tried to provide their children with financial security as well as strong religious boundaries and a working ethic that they hoped would set the kids up for life.

And it worked… for the most part. Zac’s older brother is a successful businessman and his younger sister is about to complete a Science degree.

But Zac fell through the cracks a little when he was in his early twenties and much to the horror of his parents, found himself on the wrong side of the law. It wasn’t exactly a felony, but the growing and selling of marijuana was enough to put him behind bars for 6 months and teach him the greatest lesson of his life – all actions have consequences.

His time behind bars also resulted in him losing the love of his life – Natalie Davison. They’d met at Uni where Zac was completing a teaching degree, and Natalie was buckling under her double study load of Psychology and Education. She drew Zac to her like a moth to a flame. And he provided a much needed distraction from her studies. They were inseparable and everyone believed they’d be together for life.

Natalie understood his sense of humour and shared his desire to change the world. The loss of her mother when she was a teenager gave her a unique perspective on life and opened Zac up to a world of possibilities. And in turn, Zac provided for her a stability she hadn’t really known before.

That’s not to say Zac is predictable… on the contrary, he’ll happily wake you up in the middle of the night with ‘let’s go skydiving’ or ‘have you ever thought about doing a movie stunt course’? He lives life to the fullest but when he loves, he loves deeply and without hesitation. The women in his life will never have reason to question his loyalty to them or his dedication to making a relationship work.

So why did Natalie and Zac break up? His time in prison coincided with her graduation from Uni… and her moving away to take up a Counseling position. Zac was left with a terrible decision – follow her and give up his career, or stay and finish what he started back at University. And Zac is no quitter, so he stayed, completed his Degree and then worked hard to get back into the prison system, this time on the other side of the bars.

He takes nothing for granted, perhaps that’s his religious upbringing bubbling up… not that you’d ever know it… Zac just lives his life by a code that’s informed by his belief in God. And it allows him to maintain optimism even in the darkest hour. He knows who he is and what he wants… will life give him Natalie back? Or has the horse bolted on that score? Only time will tell.
