Every couple want their guests to enjoy their wedding as much as they do, says Bride to Be’s magazine editor, Sarah Gawthorne. Here’s how...
There was some serious no holds barred, game on action in the latest episode of four weddings. Always a fan of a big entrance, the helicopter and horseback arrivals both got the thumbs up from me. Although the entertainment didn’t end there, with brides serenading grooms, magicians, dogs and dancers, hell there was even some dirty dancing amongst the groomsmen at Tamika’s wedding (a country WA tradition I’m sure the rest of Australia is thankful they don’t have to celebrate). I felt thoroughly entertained and have no doubt had I attended, I would have been speaking about all 4 weddings over the water cooler with workmates for many a months afterwards.
I think this is a pretty important point. The talking point, that is. After all the big stuff like love, commitment and celebration, your wedding is also a reflection of yourself. All those little choices you make about the ceremony and reception boil down to a wedding style statement. Certainly, what other people think about your wedding should not be a factor (lest the spirit of bridezilla inhabit your body) however focusing on what you want to achieve for your hard earned money on this special day is important. Is an intimate, simple, sentimental event your cup of tea? Or do you love the idea of dazzling your guests with a more professional approach? No matter what kind of event you want your wedding day to be, giving a little thought to your guests welfare will ensure when they do talk about your wedding, it is with glowing praise.
Entertainment at your reception (beyond mandatory daggy dancing on the dance floor at the end of the night) is not expected but if done well can really give your wedding the wow factor. Hiring dancers and magicians to perform, sketch artists and cartoonists to illustrate guests and setting up games areas for guests to hang out in are all fun ideas that your family and friends will appreciate. If budget is an issue, you can always ask your friends and family to contribute with their talent. Perhaps Aunt Martha has a great voice and would love to sing or Cousin Wallis tells great jokes, or even young Nephew Bert loves to break dance. You’ll find your guests will enjoy an amateur performance if it is done with love and a smile.
Don’t forget your guests welfare at the ceremony and that all important low point of the day (the lull between the ceremony and reception). Having fans and parasols available for guests at outdoor summer weddings or hired umbrellas for spring ceremonies are a good idea. Even photos of the happy couple on a pin board offer a great talking point and are something to look at and enjoy. In the down time between the ceremony and event, consider offering a few bottles of champagne, sparkling water and beer to guests who have a wait ahead of them before the reception starts. Finally, have mercy on your guests wearing heels and research and communicate to them (preferably in advance) the easiest way for them to reach your venue.
