One of John’s first TV roles after training at NIDA was as a regular on Home And Away. He also had ongoing roles in Water Rats and All Saints. More recently, we’ve also seen John on Always Greener and Underbelly II.

John may be the newest cast member on City Homicide, but his wide-ranging experience has already seen him become an invaluable addition to the team. Likewise, audiences are expected to quickly warm to DSC Nick Buchanan - an experienced, confident cop with a relaxed, yet single-minded, approach to solving crimes.

“Playing Nick Buchanan is great. He has a no-nonsense, no-tickets-on himself, get-the-job-done quality that I really enjoy playing. He doesn’t care what people think of him - without going out of his way to get them off side either,” says John.

“What matters to Nick is catching killers. This is always his top priority and it makes him very practical and very, very driven. At his core, he believes he’s doing the work for the dead that they can’t do for themselves and his distaste for those that don’t respect the value of human life is palpable,” he says.

John's stage credits are extensive and he has worked frequently for Australia's flagship theatre companies - Sydney Theatre Company, Melbourne Theatre Company, State Theatre Company of South Australia and the nationally touring Bell Shakespeare Company. In 2009, John received a Green room Award nomination for Best Male Performer for his leading role in MTC's production of Frost/Nixon.

“I have spent most of my recent years in working in the theatre and it’s a very important part of my life. I couldn’t give it up for just any television show. City Homicide fits the bill. It has a gravitas that appeals to me - it’s not light-weight at all. It asks its audience to think and feel whilst entertaining them at the same time,” explains John.

Soon after he scored the role on City Homicide, John moved his young family to Melbourne to concentrate on his work on the show.
