Shane Bourne is as much-loved for his work on the Australian comedy scene as he is for his contribution to Australian drama, on stage and television. His role as Detective Senior Sergeant Stanley Wolfe on City Homicide is fuelling one of his key passions.
“I enjoy having the two hats [comedy and drama] but when I’m only doing one, I want to do the other,” he explains.
"One of the most interesting facets of Stanley's journey throughout the series is the ongoing dilemma of work versus family.
“His dedication and sense of commitment to the job, which to him is more of a 'calling', is the very thing that is eroding his relationship with his wife and family.
“In his attempts to make some sense of this, Stanley continues to be a man who is sorely tested,” says Shane.
Born into a theatrical family, performing came naturally to Shane at a young age when he took to stand-up comedy and the dramatic arts. He’s had guest roles in hit dramas spanning decades – including Cop Shop, The Sullivans, Prisoner, Blue Heelers, The Flying Doctors, Cody and The Burnout.
Shane travelled the globe, before returning to Melbourne from a 12 month stint in London to take on a role in his very first play, Hurly Burly, with the Melbourne Theatre Company. This received critical acclaim and won him a Green Room Award nomination.
He became nationally recognisable after his spot on Hey, Hey, It’s Saturday, which started in 1988. He went on to be the first ever guest host on the show, which led to further hosting roles on The Midday Show and Tonight Live.
The two-time AFI winner (Best Actor for MDA in 2003 and 2005) also has a multitude of theatre credits to his name, including Picasso at the Lapin Agile, 12 Angry Men and Urinetown.
In April, Shane resumed his role presenting the popular light entertainment program Thank God You’re Here on Channel Seven.
Shane resides in his hometown of Melbourne with his 18-year-old daughter, Ruby
