Noni Hazlehurst is a leading figure in Australian film, television and theatre and continues to thrive in the role of Det. Superintendent Bernice Waverley.

"Waverley's life and career have taken some extreme twists and unexpected turns over the last two seasons and playing her has been a terrific challenge and a huge learning curve,” explains Noni.

“My experiences on City Homicide have made me respect and admire the work that our real police officers do on a daily basis even more. Working on the series has made us all aware of the pressure that the members of the police force are under, both professionally and personally.

“I'm very grateful that we have such wonderful writers and such a diligent series producer. Their dedication and commitment to keeping the standard high has been much appreciated by cast, crew and audience. And working with my son, William, was a real joy," says Noni.

Noni became a household name presenting on Play School in 1978 – however, she first won over audiences in the 70s with her many dramatic performances with Crawford Productions in Melbourne. She starred as Sharon Lewis in The Box in 1975 and had guest roles in Division 4, Matlock Police, Homicide and The Last of the Australians before joining the original cast of The Sullivans only a year later.

A fourth generation performer, it’s no wonder Noni took as naturally to presenting as she did the dramatic arts. Noni revelled in her Play School role for 23 years, while also juggling films Fatty Finn, Monkey Grip, and Australian Dream. Noni has won four AFIs (Little Fish, Waiting At The Royal, Fran and Monkey Grip) and was recently awarded Best Actress for Bitter and Twisted at the Film Critics’ Circle of Australia Awards. Noni also received critical acclaim for her roles in Candy with Heath Ledger and Geoffrey Rush and Down in Splendor.

Noni has won two Logies (Best Supporting Actress in a Mini-series for Waterfront and Best Supporting Actress in a Mini-series for Ride On Stranger) and been praised for her roles in ABC’s Logie award-winning Curtin, Stepfather of The Bride, Waiting at the Royal, Twisted Tales, Clowning Around, Nancy Wake, The Shiralee and Weekly’s War – just to name a few.

She has performed countless plays with the Sydney Theatre Company, as well as Drill Hall in London, Nimrod Theatre and the National Theatre of Perth. Earlier this year, Noni starred in the Melbourne Theatre Company production of Grace.

The beloved Play School presenter, Better Homes and Gardens host and celebrated film, theatre and TV actress has undoubtedly one of the most impressive and wide-ranging career portfolios in the business. Noni is also an in-demand writer, penning articles for newspapers and magazines, as well as contributing to several books and presenting on radio.

As National Ambassador for children’s charity Barnardos and spokesperson for the children’s financial literacy program, “Finance First”, Noni was presented an Order of Australia in 1996 for her services to children and the performing arts.
