Betty's working life is a complete contrast to her personal life. Coming from a hard-working immigrant family living in Queens. First there is her father, Ignacia (Tony Plana), an illegal immigrant who still carries a torch for Betty's dead mother and won't let his medical condition - a heart arrhythmia - get in the way of enjoying a forbidden cup of coffee. It's doubtful he'd get along with Daniel's dad, Bradford Meade (Australia's Alan Dale), the president and founder of Meade Publications. A shifty, controlling figure, whose got a few dirty dark secrets up his sleeve.
Daniel Meade (Eric Mabius) is Betty's boss, heir to a publishing fortune and owner of a little black e-book over two gigs in memory. He's worlds apart from anyone Betty's ever known as she fights to keep his bad-boy behaviour in line with her own good-girl code of conduct.
Amanda (Becki Newton) is the magazine's conceited and rathy bitchy receptionist at Mode whose had it in for Betty since the beginning, making fun of her and playing practical jokes, hell-bent on taking Betty's job by any means necessary. Betty's only true friend at Mode magazine is Christina (Ashley Jenson), the in-house seasmstress. Quick-witted, kind-hearted and scottish, she's a bit of an outsider too, but knows how to play the game. But even Christina comes under scrutiny under Betty's high-standards and their friendship is put to the test amongst the scandulous behaviour that goes on in Mode.
Betty's nephew, Justin (Mark Indelicato), might just be the only person from Betty's personal life who would fit in at Mode (his mother, Hilda (Ana Ortiz), is a former Miss Teen Queens, but is probably too much of a fashion victim not sylist for Mode's liking). An A-student in Home Economics and a lover of fashion TV marathons, Justin would probably get along really well with Marc (Michael Urie), a massive Desperate Housewives fan and flamboyant bow-tie collector.
And then there is Wilhelmina (Vanessa Williams), the self-absorbed diva and former model who now serves on the board of editors at Mode. She'll do whatever it takes to become the magazine's chief editor, even marry Bradford Meade. From the start she's been out for Daniel's job, but Wilhelmina doesn't look like she'll stop there as she sets her sights on the whole company.
And lastly there is Betty's new Mode love interest, the cute but extremely geeky accountant Henry, (Christopher Gorham), who she starts up an illicit romance with. Will Betty and Henry survive the insurmountable challenges thrown at them in the mad house that is Mode? How can an ordinary girl - a slightly plump plain-Jane from Queens - possibly fit in in the superficial world of high fashion where image is everything?
