Winter beauty tips

Throughout the year, our makeup and skin care needs change just as our wardrobe needs change.

Changing your makeup should be as effortless and natural. Just as we change into our darker and warmer clothes for winter, so do makeup trends point us towards darker and cooler colors, especially when it comes to eyes and just as we wear thicker clothing in Winter, we need to wear richer skin care.

Winter is a notoriously hard time of year for the face, which is often the only part of our bodies that are exposed to the elements. On today's show Matty briefly gave us her top tips for Winter Beauty. Here they are in full:

1. Drink water
Hydrate your skin from within by drinking lots of water. Carry a bottle with you when you go outside. Green tea is also great when it's really cold. It is full of antioxidants. Your skin will soon have a healthy glow. So drink up and don't let your skin go thirsty.

2. Sunscreen
Don't say goodbye to your Sunscreen just because summer is over. Before you leave your house, apply a sunscreen with at least an SPF of 15 or more. This will protect your skin from the winter sun. You can also combine your sunscreen with a moisturizer or even your foundation.

3. Winter Hand Care
The skin on your hands is thinner than on most parts of the body and has fewer oil glands. That means it's harder to keep your hands moist, especially in cold, dry weather. This can lead to itchiness and dry skin. Sorbelene base moisturizers are great to keep the moisture in the skin. You need to apply your hand moisturizer as many times as you can.

4. Winter Body Care
The intense heat of a hot shower or bath actually breaks down the lipid barriers in the skin, which can lead to a loss of moisture. A WARM shower is relaxing and not as drying for the skin. Winter is also a time to avoid using harsh soap and bubble bath as they can dry up your skin. Instead you should use few drops of Jojoba oil or sweet almond oil. This can help to relieve dry skin. Also limit your showers to one a day. Shower time is a good time to shave. While shaving also exfoliates the dry skin, be sure to use a moisturizing gel rather than soap, and moisturize your body immediately afterwards.

5. Winter Hair Care
Dry scalp, dandruff, and split ends are common hair and scalp problems in the winter months. Avoid over washing your hair and overusing hot blow dryers, curling irons, and hot curlers. By wrapping a towel with good absorption properties around your hair for a few minutes after washing, you will cut down your hair dryer time. If possible, avoid chemical hair treatments, such as perming, during winter months. Use conditioners generously in the winter, and try one of the natural hair treatments. Apply warm almond oil to your hair 30 min before washing your hair.

6. Winter Lip Care
Lips tend to dry out the fastest at this time of year. Be sure to keep them covered with a good lip balm applied several times during the day. Warm sesame oil will also soothe your lips. Avoid licking your lips and don't bite the skin on the surface of your lips. The skin will never have a chance to heal if you chew on it. This is a hard habit to break but well worth the effort. Lip balms are now commonly available with colour an SPF factor as well to protect them from the harmful rays.

7. Moisturizing Your Face
For people with normal/dry skin type, you may have found a moisturizer that works just fine in spring and summer. But as weather conditions change, so, too, should your skin care routine. Find a rich moisturizer that's oil-based, rather than water-based, as the oil will create a protective layer on the skin that retains more moisture than a cream or lotion. Also use a milk cleanser and less exfoliation is recommended in winter than summer. If you have oily skin you may want to remain on the same skincare routine just apply your moisturizer more frequently.

8. Foundation
During winter, the skin tone can be quite different than it was during the summer months. In order to keep your face looking natural, always choose a foundation that closely matches your skin tone throughout the year. In winter, our skin tone tends to be at its palest, you normally need one or two shade lighter foundation in winter than summer. So make sure to test a foundation before you buy it. Try a small amount on your skin and let it set for a couple of minutes, and look at the results in the best light available. You can also mix your foundation with your sunscreen or moisturizer; this will help to lighten the colour of your foundation by a shade. Don't forget your foundation should be considered to be your second skin.

9. Mascara
As mascara should be replaced about every three months, replacing it with the season is a natural and easy way to remember to make the change. Here are few helpful tips for mascara during the winter months. Winter is the best time to experiment with dramatic eyes, and smoky eyes in grey have grown in popularity recently. Black mascara is always the best colour accompaniment for smoky eyes and will help draw attention to the eyes. Make sure you buy mascara with thick brush.

10. Bronzer
You can do a variety of things using a bronzer - make your skin more beautiful, make yourself look younger, "reshape" your face. Bronzer will give you a natural healthy look in winter.
