What you need:
- Storage container-preferably a dark colour as the worms don't like the light.
- Newspaper-To line the container
- Compost- (if you don't have any, just use the newspaper instead)
- Watering can or bottle
- Worms (you can buy these from breeders but always ask mum or dad first)
- Hessian or old carpet
- Soil
- Kitchen Scraps-To feed the worms
What to do:
Line your container with newspaper.
1. Spread 5cm of compost (if you have it) into the container. If you don't have compost the worms can live in newspaper instead.
2. Shred the newspaper into strips and add soil so it spreads through the newspaper stripping.
3. Add some water to keep your worm farm moist but not too wet.
4. Then put in the worms. Just put them on the top of the newspaper, they will then creep into the bedding themselves as they do not like the light.
5. Now place a few layers of Hessian or light weight carpet on top to keep the moisture in.
6. Feed your worms. They will usually eat all sorts of scraps as long as it comes from plant matter. Fruit scraps such as banana skins are a great idea.
7. The most important thing about caring for your worms is to make sure that they are damp. Not too wet and not too dry.
8. Only feed them as the old food disappears, they don't need to be fed everyday.
