I didn't quite know what to expect come finale night... and turns out the Final 3 didn't either. When I arrived backstage, hours before the night kicked off, I found an uber nervous Rhys, a very quiet Courtney and a remarkably calm Shanina. And of course, the eliminated models.
"Don't call us that, it sounds terrible!" squealed Sheridan, who requested they just be called the "e models" instead of the actual word. She was sporting a rather nasty scab on her chin after a recent car accident – where the airbags kicked in and left our "e model" covered in a black dust but relatively unscathed.
But I am getting ahead of myself. It was rather bizarre seeing all the models in one space again... and I must say I was nervous about potential showdowns. Last time I saw them all in such close quarters was night number one, where the manners were on high. This time, a lot of water had passed under a lot of bridges and a few models were not feeling the love. Since having a chance to watch the show and see what was being said and by who, some friendships were definitely not blossoming. Kassie and Luke could barely look at one another and Billy seemed to stay relatively on his own while the others bounded about backstage.
Isaac was looking sharp and informed me he is still with his girlfriend, while Luke was chuffed to admit he's back with his ex now and all loved up, too. Brooke and Bakary hung out a fair bit, though it seemed as though all the models wanted a piece of the androgynous glamazon – Brooke was and still is, a favourite among the models. Courtney even admitted she was more excited to see Brooke than she was Billy!
Luke, Isaac and Tom spent a lot of time chatting to Rhys and trying to hype him up and calm him down for the upcoming show, while Shanina caught up with Isaac and her house bestie, Sara. Shanina and Courtney were sporting massive rollers in their hair – hot tip everyone, it took four hours of roller wearing to create those "natural" looking curls!
Hannah showed me her divine engagement ring – her boy James popped the question during a romantic moment post-show and she's sporting a vintage emerald and diamond ring that I was literally green over!
And for the juicy stuff? Well... a lot was restrained, but I will admit that the models were all openly cheering for Rhys and Shanina. And finally, it was time for everyone to strut their stuff and the Final 3 to be whittled down to just one – the Supermodel of the "Make Me".
The eliminated contestants all strutted down the catwalk, some looking foxy and some simply showing why they didn't cut the mustard. Kassie seemed to have embraced the sexpot role, delivering some smouldering glances and butt wiggles that would have left Paris proud. Tom was last to walk and suffice to say, he left everyone in awe of his catwalk prowess.
Then it was time for the trio. Courtney's shoes turned out to be a little large, and she had to tie them on her feet with elastic. Not exactly the easiest way to walk, but something a Supermodel has to seamlessly cope with and no one knew the difference.
The second Shanina and Courtney walked out, their Mums (who were watching side of stage) burst into tears and Jackie had to offer Shanina's Mum a tissue. Rhys' Mum, meanwhile, was leaving the tears to his girlfriend Claire – she was too busy beaming proudly from ear to ear.
Under his suit, Rhys had loaded up on a few necklaces and bracelets for luck, given to him by a close mate. Shanina just looked incredibly focused and seconds before walking out, she gave me a little wave before turning on her 'model face' and strutting down the catwalk.
The models were very excited about watching a montage of themselves, capturing their time on the show. Kassie cringed when she saw herself tell Shanina she wasn't versatile enough, while Hannah had a look of visible relief on her face to escape unquoted. Meanwhile, Courtney teared up watching hers, esp. during the Billy bits. Hmm... it seemed a little odd after the two steered largely clear of each other backstage, but maybe he was just giving her space, because she has confided to me that she is definitely heading up for an extended stay to Brisvegas. Maybe not a permanent move, but they both are committed to sussing things out in the "real world."
Finally, it was time for someone to be booted – and damn, that would hurt so close to the end, doncha think? As Courtney's name was called, Kassie and Sheridan looked to repress a cheer as all the models, led by Billy, stood to give her a standing ovation while she left the catwalk. All, that is, except Bakary and Brooke. Strange, given that Courtney counts Brooke as a BFF.
With just Rhys and Shanina standing up there, the tension was palpable. And when Jen said, "Rhys..." the following pause seemed to go for an eternity. Would she declare him a Supermodel? Or would she tell him to get back to the classroom?
It was the first option. And with Rhys dubbed our first winner, the stage was flooded with glitter, the eliminated models, Rhys's family and the judges and Jen. "A boy won! A boy won!" the "Baboons" (aka Isaac, Tom and Luke) hooted as they leapt around. Shanina immediately began sobbing but managed to pull herself together as her Mum joined her and whispered, "You're still a winner." Too bloody right she is – something tells me Shanina will be JUST fine.
Naturally, my eyes were on Rhys and the upcoming reunion/victory smooch with the GF. After doing the classy thing and kissing firstly his Mum, then Grandma, then mate... yawn – get to the good bit Rhys! – he finally grabbed Claire off the ground and the two had a dirty big pash on stage. Forget Hugh and Nicole in Australia, people – here was the romance!
We all headed off for a glass of bubbly and an insane amount of photos (astonishingly, these models like to pose for happy snaps). Well into the night, the exhausted Final 3 headed back to the Mansion for a few hours sleep – literally, a few – before packing their bags and going home.
I gave "Courtina" – Rhys' little toy horse and "love interest" a farewell pat before turning my attention to the man of the moment – our first male Aussie Supermodel winner and a champion to boot. "I can't believe it!" he said. "It's just so surreal and I am keen to back it up now and show Australia that I have the goods to earn the title of 'Supermodel.' I want to prove to everyone who believed in me that I was worthy of their vote and their support." Guess that proves that nice guys really do finish first. Oh God, I've gotten cheesy – somebody stop me!
And that, ladies and gents... is a wrap.
It's been a pleasure.
