Shane Bourne might've accepted the 2007 Logie award for Most Outstanding Comedy Program for Thank God You're Here, but the accomplished actor is itching to sink his teeth into a serious dramatic role.
"I enjoy having the two hats [comedy and drama] but when I'm only doing one I want to do the other," he explains.
And the role that has the two-time AFI winner (Best Actor for MDA in 2003 and 2005) back in a drama is that of a top detective with a few skeletons in the closet who has recently let religion into his life.
Playing a character with the same first name as his own father, Shane says Stanley Wolfe has "a strong air of authority, is respected, tough but fair".
"There is a culture in the police force of some serious drinking and that caused some problems and he ended up at AA - whether he's an alcoholic or not doesn't matter, it was impacting on his life and work. It was natural progression from the twelve step program for him to end up a practicing Christian."
Being back in the Melbourne studios has brought back great memories for the esteemed actor, who recalls shooting a number of guest roles on hit 70s police drama Cop Shop.
"Especially in Melbourne, there's a history of police shows going back over the years and the fact that we're actually shooting in those buildings where they were made gives it a great sense of carrying the torch," he says.
And he's confident the writing on City Homicide will grip viewers. "They're good crime stories. Viewers will be hooked into the storylines, trying to solve the crime."
Juggling his two hats - and his role as a single dad to daughter, Ruby, 16 - is working out well for Shane. "I like to be able to concentrate and immerse myself in one thing at a time, especially because City Homicide is a new series and it's a journey of discovery for everyone. So I'll be pushing people through the door on both shows - get into that cell or interview room, or get into that scenario," he says.
Well-known to audiences for his numerous television appearances, including his comedic turns on the much-loved Hey Hey It's Saturday, Shane also has a multitude of theatre credits to his name including "12 Angry Men" and "Urinetown The Musical".
