In the beginning, Matt Ryan was the Everyman of the Homicide Squad. The unassuming one. The one who gets results by hard work, rather than occasional flashes of brilliance and a pair of tweezers. The one with the slightly odd sense of humour - Matt's chuckling at the joke no one else gets. The one who knows most of all what it's like for the families and loved ones left behind. Matt's been looking after his old man and living with the memories for too many years.
He's dogged and persistent. Doesn't complain about the long hours and lack of social life. Mixes with the men as well as the boys. Mate to the girls. Comfortable with everyone and everyone with him.
But Matt's been living life at a distance since he was sixteen.
In the end, it was so terribly ordinary, what happened to his mum. It wasn't a fiendish serial killer locked in a game of cat and mouse with the wily detectives. It wasn't an exorcism gone wrong or some random gone postal. It was a reckless, inadequate guy and his heartless father. So very ordinary.
But the intrigue from this story is not that this is how Isabella Ryan's journey ended, but that this is how Matt Ryan's journey begins.
With the weight of his dad's grief now lifted from his shoulders, will Matt set out to be the person he should have become? Will he leave home? Find a girlfriend? Become less dedicated to the job? Start embracing Casual Fridays? More to the point, will he reassess his reason for being a Homicide detective? What meaning does the job hold for him now his mum's killers have been found? How will that affect the team? Can the Homicide squad accommodate a different type of Matt Ryan?
Questions, questions...
Some other curly ones to ponder over the break:
1. If Simon isn't resigning, how is he going to cope with Homicide? A few powerful words from Duncan and Matt stopped him from chucking in the towel altogether, but Simon still has to work out how he copes with what he does for a living, what he's exposed to, the things he sees. Because he can't just get angry and drink lots. Been there, done that, bought the stubbie holder.
2. What's going on with Wolfie's marriage? Dude's going to have to find some family time quick smart. Maybe he and Waverley should have ‘the talk'.
3. Where does Duncan live now that he's no longer in the funky warehouse apartment? Perhaps he could live next door to you?
4. Will Jennifer meet someone who's not in total stuttering awe of her intelligence, warmth and arse-kicking abilities? (murderers, please do not apply - been there, done that, bought the restraining order)
5. Is Waverley deliberately offing her fish? If so, why, Bernice, why?!
We can't promise answers to all or any of these questions but we hope you enjoyed Series 1 of City Homicide and keep watching for Series 2.
It's been a blast, folks. Thanks and goodnight!
