There's Stanley, who can't accept that he and Linda lost a child. He calls it a miscarriage when it was actually a still birth, in order to reduce the enormity of it in his own mind. Stanley, who deals every day with other people's loss and grief, is unable to admit to his own. Even when he's apologising to Marion Palmer and she asks him if he's ever lost a child, Stanley denies it. If Linda heard him it would break her heart.
Then there's Duncan. He's still in love with Claire even though she's developing a dangerous habit. She's been swept up in this seemingly untouchable world where everyone behaves as if taking drugs is as legit as drinking a glass of wine and no one believes they'll get caught out. She's been careless. She's been caught. If Claire's addiction is ice, then Duncan's addiction is Claire. He wants to help her but his reaction to Jarvis' proposal is based on a harsh reality. Being a cop, Duncan knows how these things usually go down. He doesn't want Claire to end up being a sacrificial lamb in the name of nailing a big time drug importer. And he also knows for the good of his career he should stay well out of it. But he doesn't.
The crime story in this episode is so devastating that to go back into it in a blog seems kinda... insensitive. But we wanted to share one insight with you that came up at one of our script meetings. Out of all the families portrayed in this episode, Robina's is the only one which shows an absence of love. And yet with two parents and one child in a comfortable home, this family is the one considered most ‘normal' by society's standards.
We couldn't let this blog go by without mentioning the other momentous event in this episode.
Matt sees Jennifer naked.
It feels odd not to follow that with a leery wink. And yes, Matt totally wants to look but his gentlemanly character and sense of respect for Jennifer makes him turn away. And then turn back to get a quick peek. He's only human after all. Poor Matt, he finally musters up the courage to ask her out for dinner and Jen closes him down straight away. But in a friendly way, mind. Could there still be a twinkle of attraction? Jennifer's a realist and maybe she is more aware of the possible repercussions of dating a colleague than Matt is. Or maybe it's that Jennifer enjoys having Matt as a good friend and doesn't want to risk that by moving into relationship territory...
Be interesting to see how long Matt can keep up the ‘okay, let's just be friends' thing...
COMING UP: A killer dies but the body count keeps on rising... And Duncan's whole world gets blown to pieces.

Seems to be quite a back story between Simon Joyner and and Sgt, Karen - can't wait for that one to come out! Anything that gets Louise Crawford on-screen more is a good thing...
