But this show isn't just about murder. It's about what happens afterwards. How do you sort things out for the people left behind? That's where our people come in. The Homicide detectives. Because if you can work out who's responsible, the friends and family have some sort of closure.
Here at City Homicide we're all big fans of the police officers who have the difficult, emotionally exhausting and, let's face it, under-paid job of investigating the terrible things people do to others. And we're also big fans of cop shows. Twisted whodunits. Adrenalin-charged chases. Big-arse baddies. We wanted to create a show where the crime drives the story but the detectives are also given the room to breathe, laugh, grow and once in a blue moon have sex...just like real people. The crime stories take up a proportion of our time in our script meetings but most of the time is spent getting the character stories right. Asking questions like, 'what does Jennifer think about this situation?' 'What effect would that speech have on Matt?' and 'Can Simon take his shirt off here?'
Now, without spoiling it for you, what can we tell you about this episode that you don't already know...?
Well, it's going to be a tough opening in Homicide for Jennifer. Walking into a team that's one detective down, filling his shoes and doing a good job, then getting passed on when Duncan comes back. That's gotta hurt. Especially when you really click with the other team-mates. We've all been therem - it's really hard to be the new person on a team whatever the circumstances. But one thing about Jennifer is she's not easily intimidated.
So, add some creepy corpses, burning houses and twisty bits, and there it is. The first episode. Our writers have been living with these characters 24/7 so it's very cool to see them come to life with such an awesome cast. Enjoy!
