Episode 424: Beginnings

A battle of the titans as Oliver continues to apply pressure on Frank to resign by using the ED as his bargaining chip. Word has got around the profession that to work at All Saints Emergency Department is not worth your life so Gabrielle and Zoe come under the pump having to use what staff they have to cover their patients and work double shifts. This is a recipe for disaster as an exhausted Erica is called away from an ICU patient to help in an emergency in Resus. Zoe has no intention of playing Oliver's game, but when Frank once again leaves the already depleted department in her care, there is a feeling that she could buckle under the pressure.

Steve and Dan are kept busy in Resus with a patient who has a mysterious abdominal bleed. When stabbing is ruled out and Mike diagnoses the problem; it becomes a question of whether or not Steve is able to turn this man's life around. Given the busyness of the ED, Dan's attitude to those who arrive here with self-induced emergencies reaches a non-sympathetic tone much to Steve's own personal chagrin. Dan's oppulent plans to propose to Erica this night are stymied due to Erica's exhaustion and Gabrielle's request for him to work a double. In the non-romantic light of the Psych Obs room, Dan finally proposes amongst the dirty bandages. Over-hearing the proposal via a baby's monitor, the ED will Erica to say "yes"; as if this is, and it is, the one happy moment to their day.

Frank is called to the dying Ann-Maree's bedside by Von who is very conscious of the fact that Bart is unable to say good-bye and give her permission to die. Frank allows Bart to rage against the dying of the light before telling him that he has to put his own needs out of the equation. The only reason Ann-Maree is holding on is because he won't let her go. This is a battle that can't be won and is about being selfless. His words of advice will resonate with Frank once he realizes the danger he, himself, is putting the ED under.

With Zoe and Gabrielle desperately trying to solve the ED's differences with Admin., the nursing staff are even more pressed. Erica attempts to be ICU nurse to a very ill patient but is called away for another emergency, thus causing the ICU patient's near death.

Jack is kept busy with a mysterious Father Paul who he attempts to keep in the Psych Obs room until he can be seen. The wandering Prophet swings between being a nuisance to providing the kind of comfort that our team would normally be able to provide were they not so busy. The strange messenger disappears as mysteriously as he appeared. Like a ghost of things to come, he made his presence felt and then leaves without a trace.

The show is becoming too emotional!! Where's all the emergency procedures gone? Outside accidents, involving ambulance procedures...too much in house emotions going on lately with the ED Staff :(

Over Bart's emotions out of all of them!
