Andrew, late 30s, is frantically driving his semi-conscious wife, Emily, to hospital. He is on his mobile phone, trying to call her mother when Emily has a fit... momentarily distracting Andrew so that he drives straight through a stop sign. SMASH. Andrew and Emily's car collides with a second vehicle, instantly killing the other driver. Cate and Heath are able to get the unconscious Emily out of the car and to Emergency but Andrew is trapped, needing the Jaws of Life. Whatever was wrong with Emily is going to remain unknown for now.

At the hospital, Frank, Charlotte and Dan run initial assessments. Emily's symptoms don't add up to her relatively minor injuries, leaving them all perplexed. Andrew is finally brought into Emergency. Jack, Steve and Gabrielle take on his care but with two broken legs, and possible head and abdominal injuries, Andrew is in no condition to help them solve Emily's medical mystery.

It is only when they start to piece together the morning's events that the team realise Emily has a pre-existing condition and that her symptoms are nothing to do with the accident.

As Andrew begins to stabilise he grapples with the consequences of the decisions he's made both today and over the course of his life. As part of this remorse Andrew reveals information that might provide the clue Frank needs to solve the puzzle.

This piece of information provides the clue Frank needs to solve the last piece of the puzzle.

Mike, unable to work so soon after his kidney donation, gets under Frank's feet in the ED.
