Still processing Gabrielle’s bombshell from the night before, Steve is called out (with Jo) to a rural clinic to help transport a patient, Neil, who is in the end stages of mesothelioma and needs Intensive Care Treatment at All Saints. This treatment, however, is palliative and will not lead to a cure and Neil knows it. All he is concerned about is making contact with his estranged son, (who he hasn’t seen since the boy was a toddler) but this is proving more difficult to achieve than he thought as the boy’s mother refuses to let Neil speak to his son.
Into Resus and Neil deteriorates to the point where intubation is a medical necessity but Neil resists, he must speak to his son first. This proves impossible so when Neil becomes delirious Elliott pretends to be his son, and allows Neil to explain why he left the boy. At first Elliott is playing a role but it’s clear he is getting something out of talking to Neil too. Neil also offers Steve food for thought about his own possible chance at fatherhood, leading him to offer Gabrielle a possible solution to their situation.
Claire unravels the increasingly complicated story of Brendan, a patient who presents with an injured hand after getting it caught in a door. But when an x-ray reveals there is a human tooth lodged in his hand, Brendan’s stories of how it got there become more fanciful. The truth gets murkier when Claire discovers women’s clothes in Brendan’s bag and his attempts to explain away their presence become increasingly farfetched. When the truth finally comes out it takes Claire by surprise.
Von has spent the night with Joan in the ED, vainly trying to secure her a bed on a ward. She tells Adam that she has no choice but to take Joan home with her. Adam cautions against this, Alzheimer’s doesn’t make for an easy house guest, but Von is firm, she knows what she is getting herself in for. And things seem to be okay, Joan settles in well, and seems very “with it”. But Von’s alarmed when she calls to check up on Joan in the middle of the day and gets no answer. She arrives home to find the smoke alarm sounding, stove on, burnt food and Joan missing. Joan, meanwhile, arrives at All Saints in the belief that she is rostered on to work. Von realises that she cannot take care of her old friend and in a moment of clarity Joan causes Von to think about her own future.
Gabrielle nurses Patrice, an archaeology lecturer, who presents after passing out and knocking her head during morning rush hour. Gabrielle immediately warms to the woman who is trying to juggle work, and a busy life organising her students to attend a ‘dig’ in Cyprus. Seems she wants it all, and Gabrielle can sympathise. But a surprise diagnosis challenges Patrice to rethink her assumptions and causes Gabrielle to query her own state of play.

Who is the guest actor who plays Neil. I am not quick enough when the credits roll to figure them out.
