Meet the staff
Find out more about the staff of the All Saints Emergency Department

With Mike still recovering from his injuries, Steve steps into the role of team leader in the MRU, and Adam fills in as a doctor. The team is called out to help two men who have been injured by a malfunctioning lift. One casualty is profoundly deaf and suffering from severe abdominal injuries, having been trapped in the door. His brother has an arm mangled in the winch mechanism, and is extremely worried for his deaf brother, being unable to communicate with or translate for him. Steve transports the first patient to hospital, leaving Adam and Jo supporting the trapped man. Rescue fail to arrive and a heated debate ensues as to whether to amputate the man’s arm to free him. Adam and Steve are at loggerheads as to the best course to take, with Steve eventually backing down. But when Mike questions the decision, Steve can’t help but feel he failed to live up to the responsibilities of leadership.

A nursing colleague of Von’s from Ward 17 days, Joan Marden, presents at Emergency, suffering from a nasty burn. She has early onset Alzheimer’s and Von is shaken to see how much her friend has gone downhill since she last saw her, only a few months ago. Von and Claire differ as to how to best communicate with the patient, with Claire preferring to orientate her to the present, while Von is content to let her live in the past. Worried for her friend’s safety, Von has trouble organising appropriate care for Joan, and eventually steamrolls Frank into getting her admitted to avoid making the painful decision. Although sympathetic, Frank makes it clear what he thinks of Von’s tactics. Late that night, a rare moment of lucidity from Joan encourages both Von and Claire to reach out to others.

Gabrielle’s sentimentality towards her late father is fuelled when a young woman brings her own dad to the ED with a broken ankle after a fall. About to leave the family nest on the trip of a lifetime, Carly worries that her father’s clumsiness is a manifestation of his reluctance to let her go. Gabrielle reminisces about her own father’s reluctance to let Gabrielle leave the farm for university, inadvertently revealing to Charlotte how important Steve was to her in the process. When the patient is discovered to have something far more serious than just a fractured ankle, he forbids Charlotte and Gabrielle to tell his daughter the truth. Gabrielle disagrees with his decision and Charlotte is forced to stop her from taking matters into her own hands. The situation helps Gabrielle to realise she too is shielding someone from the truth. But will she be able to rise above her own hypocrisy?

After a public tongue lashing from Frank, Elliott chooses his career over Bree and ends their relationship. Bree finds comfort in good ol’ fashioned friendship, with important input from a six-pack and a greasy pizza
