The MRU is called out to an explosion at a plastics factory, where multiple casualties are feared and expected. The boss, Tim, has dragged out worker, Brian, who has extensive lung damage and the MRU are concerned for his wellbeing. Tim is particularly devastated when he learns that his workers started early as a favour for him, a gesture which put them in the line of fire.
Jo rescues young apprentice Sally who has severe internal damage. She’s a sweetie and it’s clear Tim has a real soft spot for her. Bart and Amy warm to this girl and they soon learn that she’s hiding a devastating secret. Mike and Jo pull Theo out of the wreckage. He has multiple shrapnel injuries, together with disorientation and amnesia. As they bring him out, Mike hears the last worker call from the ruins so he returns to help him. He enters just as another explosion hits. It throws Mike backwards and kills the last worker inside. Tim watches it all unfold with increasing horror.
Mike is injured there is concern that the pain on the right side indicates serious damage to his one and only kidney. Von and Frank deal with the very proud Mike under a veil of secrecy, while Mike prepares for news which could end his career.
When nothing else can be done at the scene, Tim is brought into the ED. As he sits in the corridor, waiting for a doctor and devastated at the sight of his injured workers all around him, he has a sudden and delayed reaction to the blast. Steve is on hand for the emergency. Fearing his going to die, Tim – who knows his employees feel responsible – makes a deathbed declaration.
Meanwhile, Charlotte’s none to pleased when she and Adam are assigned to work on Brian together – she had an erotic dream about him last night and she can’t shake it off so she spends the rest of the day freezing him out. She struggles to focus on the case under the watchful eyes of Gabrielle who ultimately suggests that Charlotte should not be ashamed of her attraction to Adam. But Gabrielle’s given food for thought when Charlotte reminds her that her last workplace tryst left her pregnant and alone.
Frank assigns intern Elliott and Claire to deal with Theo, making it clear the neurological issue is the priority. When Theo’s obs appear normal, Elliott decides to remove the shrapnel first so he can then deal with his neurology unencumbered. When Frank finds out he’s far from happy and Elliott regrets that he’s out of favour with his boss. It’s up to him to help Theo restore his memory and, when he does, he discovers a very interesting fact about the accident.
