Gabrielle’s heart sinks when she receives a call from her brother, Ben, explaining that their father, Russell, has had another heart attack on the farm. She accompanies Steve in the MRU Chopper and on arrival they both quickly tend to Russell. It becomes apparent to Steve that this is not your garden variety heart attack and he tells Frank as much via radio. By the time Russell has been brought into the ED, Frank has learnt from Russell’s Cardiologist that Russell suffered a post-heart attack infection. Gabrielle is upset that her father has kept this from her. And things go from bad to worse when Russell’s condition deteriorates. Under serious time pressure, Frank suggests they do a pericardial drainage. Gabrielle is mortified. That could kill him. Frank says they don’t have any other options. But this is cold comfort for Gabrielle who says it will be on Frank’s head if her father dies…

Zeek, a guy in his early twenties, is also brought in after a cardiac event. However, Zeek’s problem is a lot rarer. He suffers Long QT syndrome, a killjoy of a condition which basically means that whenever he’s excited he suffers an arrhythmia. Amy takes an instant liking to the young man who manages to have a sense of humour despite his restricted life. Amy is particularly saddened to learn that he’s never had sex. Zeek asks if she could help him rectify this problem. Amy tells him it’s not possible, it’s unethical and she has a boyfriend. Zeek suffers another arrhythmia when the sound of a dropped tray shocks his fragile heart. Bart tells Zeek his condition is worsening and he’ll need to restrict his life even further. A jaded Zeek discharges himself and Amy, feeling sorry for the young man, says she’ll walk him out. Later, Zeek is brought back after suffering a full cardiac arrest. And Bart is left wondering how far his girlfriend would go to please a patient...

Mike and Steve ask that Jo give them an explanation for her imminent departure. Eventually, Jo acquiesces, telling them that she has the gene for Huntington’s disease and is terrified that it will compromise her patients’ safety. Mike tells Jo that she can’t quit on a “maybe”, symptoms of the disease may never manifest and even if they do, that could be ten years away. The ball is back in Jo’s court…

Adam struggles to come to terms with the fact that his mother looks likely to be taken away from him again.
