DIRECTOR OF EMERGENCY MEDICINE
The Head of the Emergency Department, Frank is a driven, committed perfectionist who demands nothing but the best from his staff. He’s a highly skilled doctor who is possessed of boundless energy, enormous intelligence and a scathing wit. Unfortunately, his professional brilliance fails to excuse his abrasiveness, his seemingly determined ignorance of people skills and a supreme indifference to being liked.
Many years of studying and, more importantly, experience, have imbued Frank with resourcefulness as well as the skill to put it to use. Frank is supremely confident and can back it up with great flair in his work. While many are awed by his extravagant personality and audacious doctoring, Frank doesn’t automatically inspire love in his staff – quite the opposite. In fact, his last ED team walked out en masse – tired of his constant interference, lack of respect for traditional lines of demarcation between nursing staff and doctors, and continual high demands. But with his current crew, he may have met his match.
Frank is a very complex man – full of contradictions. On the one hand, he can be blustering, rude and obnoxious, and on the other, thoughtful and compassionate. He is incapable of letting slide an opportunity to point out a mistake and yet, when proven right, rarely feels the need to gloat. At work, he shouts, accuses and delivers retribution but he is utterly loyal to his staff when outsiders threaten them – and will fight for them against the upper echelons, aggressive relatives – or whoever it may be. He doesn’t tolerate stupidity, dishonesty, refusal to take responsibility or those who are not committed to his number one priority – the patients. Though he’s been known to have a go at malingerers, he genuinely cares for the welfare of the people who enter his ED.
While Frank could be mistaken for a “rough as they come” man, he also enjoys the finer things in life: jazz, ballet and the best wine. He can quote the great poets and statesmen at the drop of a hat.
Frank is divorced, his wife, Alison Newell (also a Doctor) having left him years ago, unable to deal with the most challenging part of their life – their profoundly autistic daughter, Kathleen. Alison re-entered Frank and Kathleen’s life, taking her away to Europe for an extended working holiday.
A brief and tempestuous relationship with jazz singer, Eve Ballantyne, resulted in the second heartbreak of Frank’s life. And as a consequence, Frank has found himself alone… again. And he’s starting to think this is how it’ll be for the rest of his life.
His work is everything to him – financially, emotionally and socially. Look up the word “workaholic” in the dictionary and you’ll find Frank’s face glaring back at you. And look up “friend” and you’re likely to also find him there. There is no better person to go to in your hour of need than Frank Campion.
